ORLANDO, Fla. \u2013 After more than two hours of entertaining her devoted fans, singer Laura Pausini was getting ready to wrap up her concert at the Kia Center Thursday night with a performance of Ricky Martin\u2019s \u201cLivin La Vida Loca.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cIn just a moment it all switched and suddenly we\u2019re all rushing out of the building,\u201d Angel D\u2019Angelo recounted.<\/p>\n
D\u2019Angelo and his boyfriend had traveled from Tampa to see the artist they bonded over on their first date. And the night could not have gone any better.<\/p>\n
\u201cHe actually handed me a ring and proposed to me,\u201d D\u2019Angelo told News 6\u2019s Mike Valente Friday. \u201cSo I said, \u2018Yes.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n
In keeping with the romantic vibes, about 20 minutes later, Ricky Martin\u2019s face appeared on the big screen, fueling speculation in the crowd that the Grammy Award winner would join Pausini on stage.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe\u2019re like, \u201cHow perfect is this? We just get engaged. One of the most iconic gay artists in the world is about to come out and perform,\u201d D\u2019Angelo recalled. \u201cAnd then I look and I see on the side screen, and it says \u2018Emergency, calmly proceed to the nearest exit.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n
That is when the alarms started blasting.<\/p>\n
\u201cBecause I didn\u2019t know what was happening and we do live in quite scary times, it could\u2019ve been anything,\u201d D\u2019Angelo said. \u201cSo I wanted to be as far away from the building as possible. I wasn\u2019t sticking around to find out.\u201d<\/p>\n
A spokesperson with the Orlando Fire Department told News 6 that crews responded to a smoke alarm and \u201cupon investigation the found no fire\/no hazard.\u201d<\/p>\n
A follow-up email to OFD asking what might have triggered the alarm was not answered as of Friday night.<\/p>\n
News 6 also reached out to the Kia Center Friday, but did not receive a response at the time of this story\u2019s publication.<\/p>\n
We did, however, find a post on X that the Kia Center made in response to a user\u2019s question about the concert and the evacuation.<\/p>\n
\u201cNear the scheduled end of last night\u2019s performance, a fire alarm was activated,\u201d the Kia Center\u2019s X post read. \u201cIt was determined that there was no threat. We want to thank our guests for their understanding.\u201d<\/p>\n
D\u2019Angelo said that despite the premature exit, the night was still a success. He is, though, interested in hearing back from the venue.<\/p>\n
\u201cI do think that it would be wonderful if we could get some kind of refund or some kind of credit, especially if Laura was going to be in Florida anytime soon,\u201d he said. \u201cI would love to actually get to see the whole concert.\u201d<\/p>\n
