Memorial Day weekend is here, but so are rip currents and sargassum. South Florida beachgoers may want to plan ahead before heading to the shore.<\/p>\n

The National Weather Service issued a rip current statement<\/a> for Miami-Dade and Broward counties that remains in effect through Saturday evening.<\/p>\n

Forecasters warned of dangerous rip currents that \u201ccan sweep even the best swimmers away from shore into deeper water.\u201d<\/p>\n

As a precaution, the NWS advises beachgoers to:<\/p>\n

Swim near a lifeguard<\/p>\n

Relax and float if caught in a rip current<\/p>\n

Swim parallel to the shoreline if able to escape<\/p>\n

Face the shore and wave or call for help if unable to escape<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tSargassum is covering parts of Miami Beach as red flags warn of dangerous rip currents, but crowds are still expected for this weekend\u2019s Hyundai Air & Sea Show.\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n

And yes \u2014 sargassum is also part of the picture.<\/p>\n

Large amounts of the seaweeds<\/a> have already been detected across parts of the Atlantic and Caribbean earlier than in previous years.<\/p>\n

Experts attribute the large blooms to warmer ocean temperatures and increased nutrients in the water.<\/p>\n

That was the case Friday in Miami Beach.<\/p>\n

\u201cWell, I mean, it makes it a little more difficult to get into the water if you want to go in,\u201d said beachgoer David Mark. \u201cNature put it there, so there\u2019s not a whole lot we can do about it.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Memorial Day weekend is here, but so are rip currents and sargassum.
