HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY, Fla. (CBS12) \u2014 After nearly a decade, a homicide case involving the death of a 36-year-old man has been solved, according to the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office.<\/p>\n

Authorities arrested Marqui Newton, 34, on Thursday in connection with the May 2016 shooting death of Saadyar \u201cSy\u201d Johnson.<\/p>\n

The Hillsborough County Sheriff\u2019s Office said detectives obtained an arrest warrant for Newton, who was later arrested by the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office, HCSO deputies and the United States Marshals Service task force. Newton now faces charges of first-degree felony murder and robbery with a firearm.<\/p>\n

According to HCSO, deputies responded May 3, 2016, to the Del Rio Apartments, where they found Johnson suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. He was taken to a hospital, where he later died from his injuries. The medical examiner\u2019s office ruled his death a homicide.<\/p>\n

HCSO said investigators determined Johnson was targeted in an armed robbery. Detectives linked Newton to the crime early in the investigation, but there was not enough evidence to make an arrest. Over the past 10 years, HCSO\u2019s Cold Case Unit continued pursuing leads and used advancements in forensic technology to help solve the case.<\/p>\n

In 2025, investigators identified previously unknown witnesses and conducted follow-up interviews with earlier witnesses.<\/p>\n

With assistance from the Florida Department of Law Enforcement, investigators also carried out additional DNA testing using advanced forensic technology to gather more evidence in the homicide case.<\/p>\n
