{"id":282358,"date":"2026-05-23T22:28:14","date_gmt":"2026-05-23T22:28:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/282358\/"},"modified":"2026-05-23T22:28:14","modified_gmt":"2026-05-23T22:28:14","slug":"judge-ruling-ends-floridas-red-snapper-season-before-it-even-has-a-chance-to-begin","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/282358\/","title":{"rendered":"Judge ruling ends Florida&#8217;s red snapper season before it even has a chance to begin"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The extended season was supposed to start May 22nd, but a federal judge deemed it unlawful, sending anglers reeling ahead of holiday weekend.<\/p>\n<p>JACKSONVILLE, Fla. \u2014 A late change in the red snapper season law has left fishermen reeling.<\/p>\n<p>Recreational red snapper season was supposed to start Friday <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fisheries.noaa.gov\/bulletin\/noaa-fisheries-update-effective-immediately-no-recreational-red-snapper-fishing\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">until a judge blocked it just hours before it began.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>This year was supposed to feature a drastically longer red snapper season on the Atlantic Coast &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/myfwc.com\/news\/all-news\/efp-snapper-0526\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">from just two days last year to 39 this year.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Today went fine,&#8221; said Captain Chad Starling with Team Buck Rogers Fishing Charters as he cleaned fish at the Mayport boat ramp. &#8220;It would have been a whole lot better if we could&#8217;ve kept the red snapper we were promised to keep.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Starling says he has a dozen trips planned over Memorial Day weekend with people who traveled into town to fish for red snapper.<\/p>\n<p>However, the night before those trips started, Starling learned they may not get to keep any they catch after all.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We caught some monsters,&#8221; said Starling. &#8220;We had some that were 15-16 pounds. Every time we caught one, a guy would say, &#8216;Can we keep that one?&#8217; I&#8217;d say, &#8216;Yeah, we could&#8217;ve. Look how many meals we&#8217;re missing out on.'&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>A federal district court judge sided with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sfaonline.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">Southeastern Fisheries Association<\/a>, which represents the commercial fishing industry, to determine Florida&#8217;s extension of red snapper season was unlawful.<\/p>\n<p>The head of the association shared overfishing concerns and pointed out red snapper populations are on a rebuilding plan with a target for 2044.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;There was no information at all in these proposed EFPs as to how many red snapper these states expected to be harvested,&#8221; said Executive Director Bob Zales. &#8220;It could be that there&#8217;d have been no season in the future and no commercial quota allowable in the future.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Florida Governor Ron DeSantis spoke in Jacksonville Friday and shared his frustration with the decision, acknowledging people may have traveled for the fishing opportunity on the holiday weekend.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I just think it&#8217;s really disrespectful to try to pull the rug out from under them, especially given there&#8217;s so many fish in the sea,&#8221; said DeSanits. &#8220;It&#8217;s amazing how many of these fish are there.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>DeSantis assured fishermen Florida Fish and Wildlife won&#8217;t give them a hard time about snapper caught within state waters assuming they stay within the two fish, twenty inch limit, but Captain Starling says he doesn&#8217;t want to take a chance with so much uncertainty.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Running a charter business, I can&#8217;t risk it,&#8221; said Starling. &#8220;It&#8217;s all political theater and I&#8217;m sick of it.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/photo?fbid=1393539612808075&amp;set=a.218713613624020\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">Florida Fish and Wildlife shared\u00a0<\/a>it told its officers about the &#8220;unpredictable nature&#8221; of the situation, and they&#8217;ll make sure to educate boaters within their jurisdictional waters.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"The extended season was supposed to start May 22nd, but a federal judge deemed it unlawful, sending anglers&hellip;\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":282359,"comment_status":"","ping_status":"","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[8],"tags":[116,118,117],"class_list":["post-282358","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-jacksonville","tag-jacksonville","tag-jacksonville-headlines","tag-jacksonville-news"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/282358","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=282358"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/282358\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/282359"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=282358"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=282358"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=282358"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
