BOCA RATON, Fla. (CBS12) — Fifty dogs rescued from dangerous and unsanitary conditions in Tennessee are now in Florida with Tri-County Humane, marking the start of an extensive recovery effort for animals described by rescuers as severely neglected.

The non-profit based in Boca Raton said the dogs were removed from a property connected to Animal Rescue Corps, where conditions inside a home were reportedly hazardous. Rescue officials say ammonia levels inside the residence may have exceeded 200 parts per million — far above the normal level of around 25 — creating a toxic environment that posed serious health risks for the roughly 140 dogs.

Exposure to those conditions may have contributed to significant medical issues, including possible blindness in one dog, the non-profit said.

After spending much of their lives indoors, dozens of rescued Tennessee dogs are now on their way to Florida for care and a chance at a better life (Tri-County Humane)

Volunteers described the rescue as both urgent and emotional. For many of the animals, the journey to Florida marked only the third time they had ever been outside. Rescuers said the dogs experienced grass, fresh air, and open sky. Simple things they had rarely, if ever, known.

The group includes a wide range of breeds, from numerous small chihuahuas to a poodle, Lhasa Apso, corgi, cavapoo, and dachshund. Despite their differences, many share urgent medical needs.

According to Tri-County Humane, several dogs are in critical condition. One chihuahua has three masses requiring immediate evaluation. Others are suffering from severe dental disease, skin infections, and untreated injuries. In one especially severe case, a dog is missing its entire lower jaw.

The rescue also includes four mothers in vulnerable conditions: two currently nursing and two pregnant, both believed to be close to giving birth. Officials say the combination of medical and reproductive care has created an urgent need for resources.

Despite the trauma they endured, rescuers noted an unexpected calm during transport. The van carrying the dogs remained unusually quiet, which volunteers say may signal a sense of relief and safety as the animals leave their past conditions behind.

Tri-County Humane says its immediate focus is providing comprehensive medical care, including diagnostics, surgeries, medications, and ongoing support. The organization is asking for public assistance to help fund treatment, food, and shelter for the animals as they begin their recovery.

Officials say the road ahead will be long, but they remain hopeful that, with proper care and support, each of the dogs will eventually find a permanent and loving home.

BOCA RATON, Fla.
