Service members honored in Hillsborough County Memorial Day ceremony <\/a><\/p>\nCantin says the band was requested by the City of Philadelphia to take it on the road, where more than 150 members will perform for the city\u2019s Salute to Independence parade.<\/p>\n
\u201cI think our reputation\u00a0precedes ourselves,\u201d said Cantin. \u201cWe\u2019re one of the largest adult marching bands in the country \u2013 and that\u2019s unique.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s a big day,\u201d said tenor sax player and president of the band Brett Husselbaugh. \u201cIt\u2019s the 250th anniversary of our country and it\u2019s in somewhat of the birthplace of our country so yeah we\u2019re excited.\u201d<\/p>\n
The Second Time Around Band includes musicians of all ages. Cantin says the only parameter for joining is to have a passion for making music and a desire to revisit the old band camp days.<\/p>\n
\u201cOne of our slogans is, \u2018Why should the kids have all the fun?\u2019,\u201d said Cantin.<\/p>\n
The ensemble is roughly 250 members strong, with ages ranging from 22 years old to 81 years old.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe\u2019re all people who love playing music and, as the name suggests, it\u2019s the \u2018second time around\u2019, so we\u2019re adults and we used to do this when we were younger in school,\u201d said Husselbaugh. \u201cWe just enjoy our camaraderie and being with each other.\u201d<\/p>\n
Director Cantin tells me their band has traveled far and wide, with spots in both the Macy\u2019s Thanksgiving Parade as well as St. Patrick\u2019s Day celebrations in Dublin Ireland, but he says this performance marks the start of another tour after losing their beloved director and founder, Bill Findeison, who passed away earlier this year.<\/p>\n
\u201cI think our performance in Philadelphia will be one of those where he\u2019ll be smiling down on us,\u201d said Cantin.<\/p>\n
The band has a few more rehearsals\u00a0in the coming weeks before they\u2019ll head up to Philadelphia.<\/p>\n
