{"id":285232,"date":"2026-05-26T21:19:12","date_gmt":"2026-05-26T21:19:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/285232\/"},"modified":"2026-05-26T21:19:12","modified_gmt":"2026-05-26T21:19:12","slug":"nick-howland-to-be-next-jacksonville-city-council-president-with-joe-carlucci-to-be-next-vp","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/285232\/","title":{"rendered":"Nick Howland to be next Jacksonville City Council President, with Joe Carlucci to be next VP"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Both winners said they wanted unity and collaboration through the next year.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jacksonville.gov\/city-council\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer nofollow\">Jacksonville City Council<\/a> is elevating Vice President\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.jacksonville.gov\/city-council\/city-council-members\/al3\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer nofollow\">Nick Howland<\/a> to President in July, and has selected\u00a0Joe Carlucci as the next Vice President after a spirited campaign for the job that generally is a springboard to the top.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Howland, a Navy veteran who represents at-large Group 3, was first elected in a 2022 Special Election. He\u2019s running again in 2027 and has more than $320,000 banked for his re-election bid.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/rahmanjohnson\/\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer nofollow\">Rahman Johnson<\/a>, a Democrat who had thrown his own hat into the VP ring, crossed party lines and lauded Howland for knowing how to lead in a way that unifies.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cThe goal is not for the party to win. The goal is for Jacksonville to rise,\u201d Johnson said.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">During his year leading the Council, Howland vowed to focus on public safety, infrastructure, making Jacksonville attractive to businesses without using taxpayer dollars, and giving Citizen Planning Advisory Committees a \u201cseat at the table\u201d to give neighborhoods more of a voice.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/rubinturnbull.com\/\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer nofollow\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/rt_webad_728x90.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"728\" height=\"90\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-335063\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Howland also wanted the Council to work \u201cas a team,\u201d even though it\u2019s an election year.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Howland\u2019s nomination was uncontested. The VP slot was not, however, with four candidates and two rounds of voting preceding the selection of Republican Carlucci in a 10-9 decision over Chris Miller.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Johnson and Republican\u00a0Ken Amaro were eliminated in the first round.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Carlucci said it was \u201ctime to build consensus\u201d and \u201cbring this team back together\u201d in his brief victory remarks.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Both winners said they wanted unity and collaboration through the next year.
