The Sanibel Island Farmers Market will wrap up for the year this weekend with its final event.<\/p>\n

Celebrating its 18th season, the last market will take place on May 31 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Sanibel City Hall on the island. Free and open to the public, the weekly events start in the fall.<\/p>\n

Organized by Local Roots \u2014 co-owned by islanders Jean Baer and Betsy Ventura \u2014 the market features a different mix of vendors and products, as well as crafters, prepared meals and more.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt offers a variety of items otherwise not found on the island \u2014 ethnic foods, local crafts, et cetera,\u201d Baer said. \u201cAlso, it\u2019s a great way to bring the community together socially.\u201d<\/p>\n

She noted that it has been a great season.<\/p>\n

\u201cAttendance appears to be back to the level it was at prior to Hurricane Ian,\u201d Baer said.<\/p>\n

About 50 vendors are participating in the market this year.<\/p>\n

\u201cEthnic food, fresh fruits and vegetables, seafood, breads, meals to-go, snacks, plants, fresh flowers,\u201d she said of the range of items available.<\/p>\n

Local crafters and artisans are also taking part again.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe love having them at the market, as do the visiting guests,\u201d Baer said. \u201cThey really enjoy taking a part of Southwest Florida back home with them.\u201d<\/p>\n

In addition, different organizations are offered booth space each week.<\/p>\n

\u201cAlmost every week this year we featured a local nonprofit,\u201d she said. \u201cWe really enjoy having them there, and it is a great way for them to answer questions about their organization and share a possible upcoming event, like a concert, dance, live auction, house tours.\u201d<\/p>\n

Local Roots is also continuing its partnership with FISH of Sanibel-Captiva to help fill up its food pantry. At the end of every day, vendors can donate any excess products, which FISH picks up.<\/p>\n

On behalf of Ventura and herself, Baer shared appreciation for the community\u2019s support.<\/p>\n

\u201cAs always, we want to thank the many shoppers who came on Sundays to support these small businesses,\u201d she said. \u201cIt goes without saying that this market would not be possible without the support of our partners, the city of Sanibel, Sanibel Public Library and BIG ARTS.\u201d<\/p>\n

The public is invited to swing by for the final market.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt will signal the summer campaign of Love Sanibel Back,\u201d Baer said. \u201cAll island nonprofits are encouraged to participate by setting up a booth and sharing their mission.\u201d<\/p>\n

Shoppers are encouraged to bring reusable bags to support sustainability efforts.<\/p>\n

Also, shoppers are reminded that only service animals are allowed \u2014 with a marked vest or leash is appreciated. Emotional support dogs are not; the Americans with Disabilities Act does not cover them.<\/p>\n

Bicycle parking is available at the Sanibel library. Vehicle parking is located in the lots at the library, BIG ARTS and adjacent theater. Handicap parking is available at City Hall, as in previous years.<\/p>\n

As for next season, the market will begin in October.<\/p>\n

Applications are open on the website for participants interested in the 2026-27 season.<\/p>\n
