A man was killed after being run over by a piece of heavy machinery at a Jacksonville asphalt plant Tuesday morning.

The incident happened at Preferred Materials on New Berlin Road.

In a news briefing Tuesday afternoon, Sgt. Highfill with the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office said officers were called out to the plant at approximately 11 a.m. about an accident. When they arrived, they found the victim appeared to have been run over by a front-end loader, and first responders pronounced him dead at the scene.

The man, described as being around 60 years old, was a contracted dump truck driver making a pickup at the facility when he was hit by the front-loader, according to Sgt. Highfill.

Witnesses told police they saw the man approaching the moving piece of equipment, but the driver is believed to have been unable to see him due to the position of the front bucket.

“Initially, this doesn’t appear to be anybody’s fault, just a tragic accident,” Sgt. Highfill said.

Surveillance video was obtained by police and will be used as the investigation continues. OSHA also responded to conduct its own investigation into the workplace incident.

“Our thoughts are with the individual’s family, friends, and colleagues during this difficult time,” a Preferred Materials spokesperson told First Coast News in a statement. “The safety and well-being of our employees and anyone coming into contact with our operations are our highest priority. We are working closely with the authorities to support their investigation.”

[8
121317,121314,121316,116,118,117,121313,121315
post-286295","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-jacksonville","tag-asphalt-plant","tag-heavy-machinery","tag-highfill","tag-jacksonville","tag-jacksonville-headlines","tag-jacksonville-news","tag-preferred-materials","tag-tragic-accident
["GET
