(WCTV\/Gray Florida Capital Bureau) &#8211; After months of rumors, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis unveiled his proposed property tax plan in Tampa on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">Under his plan, which needs to be approved by the legislature and by voters, 60% of homeowners would no longer by property tax right away.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">That\u2019s because those with homestead exemptions on their homes wouldn\u2019t have to pay any property tax if their home is worth less than $250,000.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">Over a schedule set by the legislature, 92% of homeowners eventually wouldn\u2019t pay property tax at all, as that homestead exemption rises to an unlimited amount.<\/p>\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">The governor&#8217;s proposal will begin with an &#8220;initial raising&#8221; of the homestead exemption to $250,000 for &#8220;all Florida homesteaders.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Then the legislature will put in place a schedule to &#8220;eliminate&#8221; the homestead limit.<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Matt Hoffmann (@ByMattHoffmann) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ByMattHoffmann\/status\/2059633720131191066?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">May 27, 2026<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">To prevent local governments from raising taxes on what the governor called \u201csmall businesses,\u201d cities and counties would be prevented from raising their property taxes more than 5%.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">\u201cIf some billionaire from Brazil is buying something, tax em, I\u2019m looking out of Floridians,\u201d DeSantis said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">This is a developing story.
