Viewership still matters,\u00a0of course,\u00a0but it matters\u00a0every week, every\u00a0day\u00a0and every hour.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>What is\u00a0Sweeps\u00a0Week?\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Forbes published a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/bradadgate\/2021\/11\/09\/each-november-used-to-be-filled-with-blockbuster-tv-programming-what-happened\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">news\u00a0article about Sweeps Week<\/a>\u00a0in 2021\u00a0that covered its history and evolution.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe concept of sweeps began in 1954 when Nielsen began mailing out one-week TV diaries to households to\u00a0fill-out\u00a0what programs they were watching. Originally, diaries were mailed and collected in\u00a0the northeast\u00a0households before sweeping across the country to the western markets. Back then there were\u00a0a just\u00a0few broadcast stations and typically one television set in the home, making it easy for diary keepers to accurately track household viewing. For decades, the four-week sweeps\u00a0were\u00a0the only time ratings became available for local TV stations. The stations used sweeps ratings to\u00a0establish\u00a0ad rates for the following quarter.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>There was\u00a0a Sweeps\u00a0Week\u00a0at four distinct periods each year:\u00a0February, May,\u00a0July\u00a0and November.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Forbes noted an extensive list of TV\u2019s most memorable moments, which not surprisingly occurred during a Sweeps Week:\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>General Hospital: Luke and Laura\u2019s wedding\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Cheers: One for the Road (series finale)\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Friends: The Last One \u2013 Part II (series finale)\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Seinfeld: The Finale (series finale)\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Today,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nielsen.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Nielsen<\/a>\u00a0is still widely recognized as the authority in\u00a0determining\u00a0TV viewership:\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNielsen is a global leader in audience measurement,\u00a0data\u00a0and analytics. Major sports organizations, like the Super Bowl and Olympics,\u00a0study\u00a0Nielsen data\u00a0to help\u00a0indicate\u00a0public interest in their product. The NFL, for instance, noted\u00a0the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nfl.com\/news\/nielsen-revises-super-bowl-final-rating-to-125-million-viewers\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">2026 Super Bowl<\/a>\u00a0between Seattle and New England\u00a0attracted 125.6 million viewers\u00a0on NBC\u2019s channels. That fell short of the 127.7 million who watched Philadelphia and Kansas City play in 2025\u00a0on Fox.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The evolution of Sweeps Week\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>During the 1970s, 1980s and 1990s, Sweeps Week\u00a0was a big deal.\u00a0It was so big that print media even covered the ratings periods:\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Technology and viewing habits\u00a0have\u00a0evolved over the years.\u00a0As a result, networks are no longer just throwing their eggs into the Sweeps Week basket. These three factors significantly\u00a0altered the landscape of Sweeps Week:\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Television sets: Most households now\u00a0have multiple TVs, which means family members can watch multiple programs at the same time.\u00a0One individual\u00a0also can\u00a0consume media simultaneously on multiple screens, watching the TV screen while also scrolling through content on\u00a0their\u00a0smartphone or tablet.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Monitoring: Rather than relying on\u00a0individuals to complete paper forms, digital devices now\u00a0track viewing habits on a weekly,\u00a0daily\u00a0and hourly basis.\u00a0This provides continuous,\u00a0accurate\u00a0results.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Programming: Networks release new sitcoms, dramas, soap operas, news\u00a0programs\u00a0and reality shows throughout the year. New shows\u00a0can\u00a0begin\u00a0and\u00a0existing\u00a0shows\u00a0can\u00a0end at any time.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>While the news headlines above\u00a0indicated\u00a0strong value in Sweeps Week, the 2000s introduced\u00a0an evolution in the way TV viewership was measured:\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Sweeps Week is still a significant measurement\u00a0period\u00a0in the advertising and broadcast industries.\u00a0It\u2019s\u00a0just no longer the only measurement period. Nielsen produces a\u00a0national\u00a0snapshot of broadcast, cable and streaming consumption, called\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nielsen.com\/data-center\/the-gauge\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">The Gauge<\/a>,\u00a0that displays month-by-month comparisons. The Gauge shows\u00a012\u00a0months\u00a0per year rather than just four rating periods.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>TV stations in the Fort Myers-Naples DMA \u2013 which ranks No. 53 of 210 markets nationally \u2013 get viewership data through Nielsen\u00a0and return path data from cable and satellite providers like Dish Network,\u00a0DirecTV\u00a0and Comcast. The\u00a0Fort Myers-Naples DMA includes 641,850 total households across Collier, Lee, Charlotte, Hendry,\u00a0Glades\u00a0and Desoto counties.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Nielsen\u2019s Data Center notes\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nielsen.com\/data-center\/the-gauge\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">TV viewing trends by platform<\/a>.\u00a0In 2025,\u00a0more people consumed\u00a0their TV via broadcast and cable stations\u00a0than over streaming platforms. In 2026, streaming\u00a0now\u00a0represents\u00a0a larger\u00a0portion\u00a0of TV viewers:\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Broadcast: 20.5% in March 2025, 20.3% in March 2026\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Cable: 24.0% in March 2025, 21.4% in March 2026\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Streaming: 43.8% in March 2025, 47.6 in March 2026\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Other: 11.7% in March 2025, 10.7% in March 2026\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Other ways to measure audience\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The four major network television stations \u2013 ABC, CBS,\u00a0FOX\u00a0and NBC \u2013 each offer multiple avenues to view their programming. Locally, network affiliates \u2013 Gulf Coast ABC, WINK News, FOX\u00a0Florida\u00a0and Gulf Coast NBC \u2013 offer their content on a variety of platforms. The\u00a0region\u2019s PBS affiliate, WGCU, also posts content across channels.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Local TV stations also\u00a0keep tabs on\u00a0viewers who see their content on places other than the small screen:\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>These channels are increasingly important from a financial perspective, too.\u00a0News\u00a0stations and publishers sell advertising on their websites.
