Thursday’s update showed coastal regions downgraded to severe drought thanks to the return of the rainy season. Most of the region is still facing extreme drought. Over the past month, most coastal communities have picked up well over the average monthly May rainfall. Cape Coral has picked up over 200 percent of normal rainfall over the last 30 days! However, many inland communities have picked up less than 50 percent. While we’ve made some progress in May, we still have to make up for a large rainfall deficit so far this year. Some coastal communities need over 20 inches of rain in order to eliminate drought. As we head into June, our average monthly rainfall jumps to over 9 inches! The rainy season runs through October 15.
