The Rising Stitch\u00a0is Tallahassee’s newest fabric store and studio.<\/p>\n

Located at 2030 Thomasville Road, Suite 7-8, the retail chain had its soft opening Oct. 11. The store provides fabrics and lessons to quilters, crafters and sewing enthusiasts.<\/p>\n

Rebecca Pitts and her mother Katherine Pitts own the business.<\/p>\n

The daughter said she picked up the hobby years ago and created Civil War reenactment costumes, ball gowns and other creations.<\/p>\n

About 10 years ago, she was able to revive her mother’s love for sewing when she got an early diagnosis for Parkinson’s disease.<\/p>\n

The Rising Stitch – Fabrics & Lessons is Tallahassee’s newest fabric store and studio, located at 2030 Thomasville Road, Suite 7-8.<\/p>\n

They both felt Tallahassee lost a valuable resource this year with the closing of Joann Fabrics on Thomasville Road after the Ohio-based retail chain announced plans to close over 800 stores nationwide in March.<\/p>\n

Joann Fabrics has since made a sort of-comeback after Michaels, the craft store retail chain, purchased Joann’s intellectual property<\/a>\u00a0in June and debuted “The Knit & Sew Shop” featuring Joann branding and private-label brands from the former retailer.<\/p>\n

“With Joann’s closing in town, there really became nowhere else here that focused on non-quilting type sewing,” Pitts said. “You have quilt shops in town but there’s no garment-making, costuming or anything like that.”<\/p>\n

The store is still in an extended soft opening mode and expects to receive more inventory soon. It plans to have a grand opening in early November.<\/p>\n

In addition, she said the store will specialize in the use and maintenance of Janome machines.<\/p>\n

“We’re hoping to provide a sense of community and a space that, whether you’re threading a needle for the first time or you’ve been doing this your whole life,” Pitts said, adding it will be a “space to connect and grow your hobby.”<\/p>\n
