{"id":288199,"date":"2026-05-28T22:55:12","date_gmt":"2026-05-28T22:55:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/288199\/"},"modified":"2026-05-28T22:55:12","modified_gmt":"2026-05-28T22:55:12","slug":"family-of-detainee-fears-conditions-inside-alligator-alcatraz-as-new-lawsuit-targets-facility","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/288199\/","title":{"rendered":"Family of detainee fears conditions inside Alligator Alcatraz as new lawsuit targets facility"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph\">MIAMI \u2014 Yesenia Perez says she hasn\u2019t seen her brother in 76 days.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">He is being detained inside <a href=\"https:\/\/www.local10.com\/topic\/Alligator_Alcatraz\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.local10.com\/topic\/Alligator_Alcatraz\/\">Alligator Alcatraz<\/a>, and Perez fears for her brothers life.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.local10.com\/espanol\/2026\/05\/28\/familia-de-detenido-teme-por-condiciones-dentro-de-alligator-alcatraz-mientras-nueva-demanda-apunta-a-la-instalacion\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.local10.com\/espanol\/2026\/05\/28\/familia-de-detenido-teme-por-condiciones-dentro-de-alligator-alcatraz-mientras-nueva-demanda-apunta-a-la-instalacion\/\">Leer en espa\u00f1ol<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Her fears add to months of mounting concerns over alleged inhumane conditions inside the facility, claims state officials have denied.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cThey treat us like we are the scum of the earth,\u201d said detainee Arlexis Linares during a phone call with his sister.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Linares said detainees often go hungry and questioned the quality of the water they are given to drink.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cThey don\u2019t drink that water. They drink bottled water,\u201d Linares said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cWe drink this mystery water,\u201d Linares added. \u201cI call it mystery water because I don\u2019t know where the water comes from.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">As the facility reportedly begins the process of shutting down, the state is now facing another lawsuit.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">This time, the Center for Biological Diversity argues diesel-fueled generators at the facility are emitting \u201csignificant amounts of dangerous air pollutants that are harmful to human health and the environment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">An attorney for the environmental group told Local 10 News, \u201cSmall businesses that emit air pollution go get air pollution permits, but the state thinks it\u2019s above the law.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">The lawsuit also points to a state-commissioned environmental assessment that said no significant adverse impacts were expected from operating the facility, with the exception of air quality.<\/p>\n<p>\ud83c\udfe0 News From Your Neighborhood<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph b-article-body__copyright\">Copyright 2026 by WPLG Local10.com &#8211; All rights reserved.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"MIAMI \u2014 Yesenia Perez says she hasn\u2019t seen her brother in 76 days.
