IF YOU HAVE TO HEAD OUT THE DOOR, TAKE IT SLOW ON THE ROADWAYS. GOVERNOR RON DESANTIS IS CALLING FOR A SPECIAL LEGISLATIVE SESSION TO TALK ABOUT PROPERTY TAXES. HE STILL WANTS TO SIGNIFICANTLY CUT THEM OR DO AWAY WITH THEM ENTIRELY. FOR A MAJORITY OF FLORIDIANS. BUT THESE TAX BREAKS WILL COME WITH A PRICE. WESH 2 NEWS LUANA MUNOZ EXPLAINS. GOVERNOR DESANTIS WANTS LAWMAKERS TO PUT A PROPERTY TAX CUT ON THE NOVEMBER BALLOT. HIS PLAN WOULD EXEMPT THE FIRST $250,000 OF A HOME’S VALUE FROM PROPERTY TAXES, MEANING MANY FLORIDA HOMEOWNERS WOULD PAY LITTLE OR NOTHING. THE FLORIDA ASSOCIATION OF COUNTIES SAYS THE CHANGE WOULD COST LOCAL GOVERNMENTS $14 BILLION STATEWIDE. THE GOVERNOR SAYS CORE SERVICES LIKE PUBLIC SAFETY, EDUCATION, INFRASTRUCTURE AND NATURAL RESOURCES WON’T LOSE FUNDING. THE FLORIDA ASSOCIATION OF COUNTIES SAYS THERE ARE ESSENTIAL SERVICES NOT ON THAT LIST. OUR SERVICES FOR VETERANS OF CORE SERVICES. WHAT ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH AND THE HEALTH SERVICES THAT WE PROVIDE? WHAT ABOUT EMERGENCY RESPONSE AND RECOVERY? ALSO NOT ON THE LIST ARE LIBRARIES, PARKS. THE SUPERVISOR OF ELECTIONS OR THE COUNTY CLERK’S OFFICE, AND SO MUCH MORE. THE SEMINOLE COUNTY COULD TAKE A HIT OF $113 MILLION IN THE FIRST YEAR ALONE. SEMINOLE COUNTY TAX COLLECTOR JR KROLL SAYS THE LOSS WOULD BE DEVASTATING. PEOPLE THINK THAT THERE’S JUST A LARGE AMOUNT OF MONEY. YOU KNOW, THAT THE COUNTY HAS. AND THE REALITY IS IT’S VERY EXPENSIVE TO RUN A COUNTY. SO SO THEY’RE NOT THERE’S NOT THIS SLUSH FUND OF MONEY WHERE THEY JUST HAVE TONS OF MONEY COMING IN. THEY HAVE TO, YOU KNOW, ALWAYS WATCH AND DECIDE WHERE MONEY IS GOING TO GO AND HOW THEY’RE GOING TO ALLOCATE FUNDS. SERVICES WOULD CUT IN HALF. AND WHILE PEOPLE THINK THEY’RE PAYING LESS, KROLL SAYS, DON’T BE FOOLED. THE GOVERNMENT IS STILL GOING TO HAVE TO PAY FOR BILLS, AND THERE’S GOING TO HAVE TO FIND ANOTHER WAY OF WHERE THIS MONEY WOULD COME FROM. EVEN OWNERS OF MULTI-MILLION DOLLAR VACATION HOMES AND CONDOS WOULD SEE A BREAK. THEIR NON HOMESTEAD TAX CAP DROPS FROM 10 TO 5%, WHILE EVERYONE PAYS LESS. EXPERTS SAY IT MAY COST TAXPAYERS MORE THAN THEY BARGAINED FOR. THE DEMAND FOR THE SERVICES DOESN’T GO AWAY, EVEN THOUGH THE

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis has announced a proposal to eliminate or drastically reduce property taxes for homeowners, calling for a special session next week for lawmakers to review the plan. Under the proposal, the current homestead exemption would increase from $50,000 to $250,000 immediately. For example, if a homeowner purchased a house last year for $350,000, they are currently taxed on the assessed value minus the $50,000 exemption under the Save Our Homes program. If the proposal passes, the exemption would rise to $250,000, meaning taxes would only apply to $100,000 of the home’s value, effectively cutting two-thirds of the property-tax bill. In another scenario, if a homeowner bought a $200,000 home 10 years ago that is now worth $350,000, existing assessment limitations combined with the new proposal could result in essentially zero property taxes. The plan also includes changes for second homes and non-homestead properties, reducing the annual tax increase cap from 10% to 5%. While the proposal would slow the rate of tax increases for these properties, it would not necessarily lower their taxes. If the measure passes, voters will have the opportunity to decide on it in November. Lawmakers are scheduled to discuss the proposal during a special session next week.

      TALLAHASSEE, Fla. —

Florida Gov.
