Tengi undergoes multiple CT scans.

Tengi undergoes multiple CT scans.

For the past several months, “Tengi,” a nearly 10-year-old female endangered Malayan tapir had been experiencing fluctuations in appetite, weight, and activity levels.

In an effort to determine the cause, Zoo Miami’s Animal Health Department recently conducted a comprehensive series of diagnostic tests, including blood and urine analysis, ultrasounds, an endoscopy, radiographs, and dental examinations. Other than the presence of some excess fluid in her abdomen, there were no clear indications pointing to a specific cause for the issues she was experiencing.

It was ultimately determined that a CT scan would be necessary to obtain a more detailed view of Tengi’s internal organs and digestive tract. Because Tengi weighs more than 600 pounds, there was no CT scanner readily accessible to Zoo Miami capable of accommodating her size.

Thankfully, the Animal Health Department was able to partner with the Palm Beach Equine Clinic and arrange for Tengi to be transported there to utilize a specialized CT scanner designed specifically for horses.

Zoo Miami Associate Veterinarian, Dr. Nicholas Buscaglia, led the Zoo Miami team and worked closely with Palm Beach Equine Clinic Imaging Coordinator Brittany Riddle, and CT manager Holly Hall to coordinate the procedure and ensure Tengi received a series of specialized scans.

After a two-hour drive north, Tengi was successfully anesthetized and underwent multiple CT scans at the state-of-the-art facility. She was then safely transported back to Zoo Miami, where she has since returned to her habitat and recovered well from the procedure.

It will likely be several days before scan results are fully analyzed and available.

Zoo Miami is profoundly grateful to the team at the Palm Beach Equine Clinic in Wellington for their expertise, generosity, and assistance in this important effort. It is both inspiring and rewarding to see so many dedicated professionals willing to devote their time, knowledge, and extensive resources to help protect and care for our world’s endangered wildlife. Hopefully, these scans will provide definitive answers regarding Tengi’s condition and help guide the best path forward for her care.
