{"id":289477,"date":"2026-05-29T22:52:15","date_gmt":"2026-05-29T22:52:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/289477\/"},"modified":"2026-05-29T22:52:15","modified_gmt":"2026-05-29T22:52:15","slug":"august-special-election-could-fill-terrance-freeman-seat-on-jacksonville-city-council","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/289477\/","title":{"rendered":"August Special Election could fill Terrance Freeman seat on Jacksonville City Council"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Those voting in Duval County\u2019s August Primary will be picking a new City Councilman, as term-limited\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/floridapolitics.com\/archives\/759106-i-know-whats-at-stake-terrance-freeman-launches-hd-12-campaign\/\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">Terrance Freeman<\/a> announced plans to step down amid a House bid.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Freeman, who was appointed to the Jacksonville City Council in 2018 then elected in 2019 and 2023, said his resignation is effective either in Nov. 2 or in August, depending on when a replacement is elected.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">He is running to replace term-limited Republican Rep. Wyman Duggan in House District 12.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The August election, which is countywide since Freeman is one of five at-large members of the Council, will be open to all voters, since Jacksonville\u2019s local Primaries are nonpartisan. If one candidate gets a majority, the election is decided. Otherwise, the top two face off during the November General Election.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">While the Duval County Supervisor of Elections webpage has not been updated to reflect the Special Election, three candidates were running for Freeman\u2019s seat in the 2027 General Election.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.florida.gop\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener external noreferrer nofollow\" data-wpel-link=\"external\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-764247 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/Ads-RPOF-Newsletter_728x90.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"728\" height=\"90\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Republican <a href=\"https:\/\/floridapolitics.com\/archives\/753281-deborah-wesley-scores-10-incumbent-endorsements-for-jax-city-council-bid\/\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">Deborah Wesley<\/a>, a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jaxsheriff.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer nofollow\" data-wpel-link=\"external\">Jacksonville Sheriff\u2019s Office<\/a> Commander, is the choice of 10 current members of the City Council. She has raised nearly $80,000 as of the end of March.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Libertarian\u00a0Addison Jade Patrick has raised nearly $500. Independent\u00a0Nancy Quinones has yet to report fundraising.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Those looking to qualify by petition will need 1,855 signatures. Otherwise, they will have to pay $3,408 if they are members of a party, or $2,272.16 if unaligned.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Qualifying runs from noon on June 11 to noon the next day.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Freeman is well-positioned for his Primary.
