“Tarantula” by Eduardo Halfon: During an end-of-the-year school break in 1984, two brothers, age 12 and 13, who have been exiled for several years to the United States, travel home to Guatemala to learn survival skills in a Jewish children’s camp in a remote forest in the highland mountains. Despite their reluctance, the boys, who no longer know their homeland and barely speak the language, have been signed up by their parents in hopes of restoring their allegiance to their religious and national heritage. Upon their arrival, the brothers are met with the promise of adventure in the person of the camp director, Samuel. But early one morning they are roused from their beds and forced to play a sinister game they can’t afford to lose. The theme for this year’s Summer Reading Program for kids is “Plant a Seed, Read!” Just as a farm grows food that nourishes our bodies, libraries grow ideas that nourish our minds. The library is inviting kids to join it in cultivating those ideas this summer through reading and participating in a range of\u00a0fun activities. Kids’ first opportunity to register for the program will be during the library’s Opening Party at 10 a.m. June 9.<\/p>\n
This year’s Jacksonville Public Library’s Adult Summer Reading Program will begin Monday. Stop by the circulation desk to pick up a reading log for the chance to earn prizes for reading. List five books you have read this summer on your reading log and your name will be entered for a grand prize drawing on Aug. 2. You will get a small prize just for turning in your reading log. Any adult is eligible to participate; no library card required.
