Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis announced in a May 28 press release that he directed to have flags flown at half-staff in honor of the memory of Chiefland City Commissioner and former Mayor John Christopher “Chris” Jones.<\/p>\n

“I hereby direct the flags of the United States and the State of Florida to be flown at half-staff at the State Capitol in Tallahassee, Florida, and all local and state buildings, installations, and grounds throughout the City of Chiefland from sunrise to sunset on Friday, May 29, 2026,” DeSantis said in the release.<\/p>\n

Who was Chris Jones?<\/p>\n

Chiefland Mayor Lewrissa Johns on May 19 said the city suffered a tremendous loss with the passing of Commissioner Chris Jones, who died on May 18.<\/p>\n

“Since 2013, Chris faithfully served our community as a commissioner, Vice Mayor, and Mayor. He was a lifelong member of this community and his years of public service have reflected his dedication and commitment to the city he loved,” Johns said.<\/p>\n

Acknowledging DeSantis’ half-staff order, Johns also wrote on a May 28 post that the recognition reflects the impact Jones had in the city.<\/p>\n

Will there be a funeral service?<\/p>\n

Yes. Carnegie Funeral Home announced on its Facebook page that a funeral service will be held at Lighthouse Word Church in Chiefland on May 29 at 11 a.m.<\/p>\n

A viewing was held at Chiefland City Hall on May 28.<\/p>\n
