A special election to replace a Jacksonville city councilman following the announcement of his resignation will be held in August, the Duval County Supervisor of Elections Office announced Friday.<\/p>\n
Jacksonville City Council and Mayor Donna Deegan passed a resolution on Tuesday, approving a “Special First Consolidated Government Election” to be held on Tuesday, Aug. 18.<\/p>\n
The election will be held to fill the vacancy created by the resignation of City Council Member Terrance Freeman, At-Large Group 1. Freeman is set to run for an elected position in the Florida Legislature.<\/p>\n
If no candidate receives a majority of the votes in the election, according to the resolution, then the two candidates with the highest vote totals will participate in a special general election to be held on Tuesday, Nov. 3, the elections office stated.<\/p>\n
According to Duval County Supervisor of Elections Jerry Holland, the number of petitions needed to qualify for candidacy for City Council At-Large Group 1 is 1,855.<\/p>\n
The qualifying fees are as follows:<\/p>\n
$3,408.24 for partisan candidates<\/p>\n
$2,272.16 for candidates with no party affiliation<\/p>\n
Qualifying begins at noon on June 11, and ends at noon on June 12, according to the elections office.<\/p>\n
