DELAND, Fla. (CBS12) \u2014 A Florida man who managed to slip through the cracks of the sex offender registry after a past in Utah is behind bars after a raid uncovered 42,000 illicit files.<\/p>\n

Volusia County Sheriff’s Office detectives arrested 40-year-old Trent Prather the morning of May 24. Following the initial forensic examination that revealed the massive trove of illicit materials, investigators added 20 counts of possession of child exploitation materials to his charges.<\/p>\n

According to authorities, the recovered images depicted young girls between the ages of 4 and 10. Officials noted that Prather’s own children fall within that exact age range.<\/p>\n

Prather was initially taken into custody on weapons charges and is currently being held with no bond while the investigation continues.<\/p>\n

Sheriff’s officials revealed this is not Prather’s first encounter with law enforcement regarding these types of crimes.<\/p>\n

In 2011, Prather was reportedly investigated and arrested in Utah for viewing similar content, which mostly involved girls aged 6 to 7, and some as young as 2 years old, per deputies.<\/p>\n

He was ultimately charged with 10 counts of exploitation of a minor in that case and sentenced to probation.<\/p>\n

Utah authorities investigated Prather a second time in 2018 after receiving a tip from the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children regarding downloaded files, but officials say there was not enough evidence to prosecute him at the time.<\/p>\n

The case has raised serious questions from local law enforcement about how Prather was permitted to relocate from Utah to DeLand without registering as a sex offender.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"DELAND, Fla.
