What happened<\/p>\n

Florida on Monday sued OpenAI and CEO Sam Altman<\/a>, alleging that the company\u2019s AI chatbot violates state consumer protection laws. \u201cAltman and ChatGPT have chosen the AI race over the safety and security of our kids,\u201c Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier (R) said at a news conference. \u201cWe\u2019re going to make them pay for hurting our kids.\u201d<\/p>\n

Uthmeier\u2019s suit<\/a> accuses OpenAI of a \u201clitany of harms\u201d driven by its \u201cinsatiable quest to win the AI arms race and amass large fortunes\u201d regardless of known dangers, including abetting mass shooters, encouraging suicide and hooking minors on an unsafe tool<\/a>. It\u2019s the first state lawsuit against OpenAI and Altman, but the latest \u201cbroadside in a growing rebellion\u201d against AI chatbots, The Wall Street Journal<\/a> said.<\/p>\n

Uthmeier has \u201cemerged as a key antagonist\u201d of AI since Florida\u2019s GOP-led House \u201caligned with President Donald Trump\u201d and blocked Gov. Ron DeSantis\u2019 (R) \u201cefforts to police\u201d the technology, said Politico<\/a>. Monday\u2019s civil suit is separate from Ulthmeier\u2019s ongoing criminal investigation into ChatGPT\u2019s alleged role in planning a mass shooting at Florida State University.<\/p>\n
