ORLANDO, Fla. \u2013 There are two kinds of people: the ones who have tried a pottery wheel and the ones who think they\u2019ll be terrible at it.<\/p>\n
Super Awesome Cool Pottery in Central Florida is making sure that second group doesn\u2019t stay scared for long.<\/p>\n
The studio offers hands-on experiences that feel equal parts art class and stress relief \u2014 especially its beginner pottery wheel class, where first-timers learn the basics of throwing clay and leave with pieces that are uniquely their own.<\/p>\n
\u201cPottery is such a mindfulness activity. For that hour, it\u2019s just the you and the clay. So you\u2019re focusing on the present moment,\u201d said Hunter Holmes, who teaches classes and handles marketing coordination at Super Awesome Cool Pottery.<\/p>\n
Beginner pottery wheel class: what to expect<\/p>\n
If you\u2019ve ever watched someone on a wheel and thought, I could never do that, this is the class designed to prove you wrong.<\/p>\n
Holmes said the beginner potter\u2019s wheel class is structured, guided and friendly for all skill levels.<\/p>\n
\u201cYou\u2019re going to be guided through the creation of two bowls on the potter\u2019s wheel,\u201d Holmes said.<\/p>\n
After the wheel portion, students move to the studio area to glaze and paint their pieces \u2014 and they can take their time.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe class is about an hour long in the wheel room. Once you\u2019ve completed the class, you can stay as long as you like to paint your bowl,\u201d Holmes said.<\/p>\n
Super Awesome Cool Pottery then takes over the behind-the-scenes part of ceramics: drying, glazing and kiln firing. Finished pieces are typically ready for pickup in about a month to a month and a half.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe hold them for about 4 to 6 weeks so we can let them fully dry, avoid any explosions in the kiln,\u201d Holmes said. \u201cWe\u2019ll then put a clear coat of glaze on top to make sure everything is food safe, and then we fire them and give you a text when they\u2019re ready.\u201d<\/p>\n

One of the reasons beginners relax quickly is the studio\u2019s emphasis on process over perfection.<\/p>\n
Holmes encourages students to avoid comparing their work to others.<\/p>\n
\u201cDon\u2019t judge by your neighbors, don\u2019t compare yours to mine. The clay is going to do what the clay is going to do,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
That\u2019s part of what makes ceramics feel approachable: everyone starts with the same ball of clay, but the outcomes are wildly different.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe start with the same ball of clay and everything looks completely different,\u201d Holmes said.<\/p>\n
The lesson extends beyond art technique. If a bowl collapses or the clay wobbles, the point isn\u2019t to panic \u2014 it\u2019s to try again.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe clay teaches you that when things go wrong, it\u2019s okay. You can start over. You can recycle the clay and use it again,\u201d Holmes said.<\/p>\n
More than wheel classes: pottery painting, kids programs and Ferret Night<\/p>\n
The studio\u2019s calendar goes beyond the wheel.<\/p>\n
Super Awesome Cool Pottery also offers pottery painting \u2014 the kind of drop-in, low-pressure activity that works for families, date nights and friend hangouts.<\/p>\n
And yes, the studio hosts Ferret Night, where guests paint pottery while ferrets roam and visit tables.<\/p>\n
\u201cThroughout the night, ferrets will come and play at your table,\u201d Holmes said.<\/p>\n
