\n\t\t\t\t\t\tA black bear was spotted two consecutive days this week in the backyards of homes along SW Lake Fern Circle in the Town Park community of Tradition in Port St. Lucie.The community is known for having issues with feral hogs, so a local trapper set up a trap there along with a camera to keep an eye on it.Trapper Jay of Treasure Coast Wildlife Trappers got an alert from the camera early Sunday morning. “And we’re like, ‘Oh my God, there’s a bear by the trap,'” Jay said. The adult black bear lingered for hours, first appearing on video around 2 a.m. and still roaming near the trap at almost 5 a.m. At one point, the bear became curious about the camera, sniffing and licking it. At the same time, neighbors were getting curious about the bear.”Pretty interesting, to say the least,” resident Rachel Murray said. “We got a lot of critters in the backyard. This is our first bear,” said Bob Lopopolo, another resident. The bear returned the next day, Monday morning, again spending hours near the trap and investigating the camera. Bear sightings in the area are uncommon, and Trapper Jay advised neighbors to not approach if they see a bear.But he had different advice if the bear sees a neighbor. “What you want to do at that point is make loud noises. You want to kind of haze the bear. You want that bear to be afraid of humans,” Trapper Jay said. The bear has not been spotted for a few days, and Trapper Jay believes that means the bear has moved on.However, he still urged neighbors to remain cautious. “Just keep your eye out. Be safe. When you’re out there, make sure you have a flashlight at night, you have your dogs on a leash, and that you stay vigilant,” he said.
