{"id":295973,"date":"2026-06-04T16:34:14","date_gmt":"2026-06-04T16:34:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/295973\/"},"modified":"2026-06-04T16:34:14","modified_gmt":"2026-06-04T16:34:14","slug":"doral-to-swear-in-new-police-chief-on-june-17","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/295973\/","title":{"rendered":"Doral to swear in new police chief on June 17"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"text text--small text--normal text--primary\">Published:\u00a0June 4, 2026 at 11:22 AM<\/p>\n<p class=\"text text--small text--normal text--primary\">Updated:\u00a0June 4, 2026 at 11:59 AM<\/p>\n<p>Miami Springs Police Chief Matthew Castillo to take over Doral Police Department lead-art-block.fullscreen-enterExpand<img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" data-chromatic=\"ignore\" alt=\"\" class=\"c-image\" loading=\"eager\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/C2MAARZPSFFIBL7PXEDJR7JBAM.jpg\"  width=\"1280\" height=\"720\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">DORAL \u2014 Matthew Castillo will be leaving his post as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.miamisprings-fl.gov\/police\/page\/police-administration\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.miamisprings-fl.gov\/police\/page\/police-administration\">Miami Springs police chief<\/a> to take over the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cityofdoral.com\/Departments\/Police-Department\/Command-Staff\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.cityofdoral.com\/Departments\/Police-Department\/Command-Staff\">Doral Police Department<\/a> in about 13 days, city officials announced on Thursday. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.local10.com\/espanol\/2026\/06\/04\/doral-juramentara-a-nuevo-jefe-de-policia-el-17-de-junio\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.local10.com\/espanol\/2026\/06\/04\/doral-juramentara-a-nuevo-jefe-de-policia-el-17-de-junio\/\">Leer en espa\u00f1ol<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Castillo, 42, who is replacing former Chief<a href=\"https:\/\/www.local10.com\/news\/local\/2026\/05\/08\/miami-names-homegrown-leader-as-new-police-chief\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.local10.com\/news\/local\/2026\/05\/08\/miami-names-homegrown-leader-as-new-police-chief\/\"> Edwin Lopez<\/a>, starts his new job on June 15, before a formal swearing-in ceremony on June 17, according to the city\u2019s announcement. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Doral Mayor <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cityofdoral.com\/Elected-officials\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.cityofdoral.com\/Elected-officials\">Christi Fraga<\/a> released a statement saying Castillo will be \u201ccombining proactive policing, modern technology, and meaningful community engagement to drive real results.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Fraga announced Lopez\u2019s departure <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cityofdoral.com\/News-articles\/Official-Statement-from-Mayor-Christi-Fraga-on-the-Departure-of-Chief-Edwin-Lopez\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.cityofdoral.com\/News-articles\/Official-Statement-from-Mayor-Christi-Fraga-on-the-Departure-of-Chief-Edwin-Lopez\">on May 11<\/a> after his hire as Miami\u2019s new police chief to lead <a href=\"https:\/\/www.miami.gov\/My-Government\/Departments\/Police-Department\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.miami.gov\/My-Government\/Departments\/Police-Department\">over 1,100<\/a> sworn police officers. Doral has about 190 sworn police officers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">In a statement, <a href=\"\" rel=\"\" title=\"\">Zeida Sardi\u00f1as<\/a>, Doral\u2019s city manager, described Castillo as \u201ca respected law enforcement leader in our region who understands our community and has worked alongside our department through prior collaboration.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Castillo started his career with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.miamisprings-fl.gov\/police\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.miamisprings-fl.gov\/police\">Miami Springs Police Department<\/a> as a public service aide in 2009.
