Here\u2019s what Florida law says"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">ORLANDO, Fla. \u2013 It\u2019s a common sight along many highways in the Sunshine State: an officer pulling over a driver, or a car crash that moved to the roadside.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">It may just seem like good manners to give these vehicles a wide berth, but in the Sunshine State, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flhsmv.gov\/driver-licenses-id-cards\/visiting-florida-faqs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.flhsmv.gov\/driver-licenses-id-cards\/visiting-florida-faqs\/\">there\u2019s a little more to it than that<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">In Florida, state statutes include a \u201cMove Over\u201d law, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flhsmv.gov\/2023\/12\/29\/florida-department-of-highway-safety-and-motor-vehicles-fhp-and-partners-focus-on-the-importance-of-moving-over-during-january-safety-campaign\/#:~:text=The%20Move%20Over%20Law%20was%20put%20into,Move%20Over%20Law%20and%20downloadable%20campaign%20materials.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.flhsmv.gov\/2023\/12\/29\/florida-department-of-highway-safety-and-motor-vehicles-fhp-and-partners-focus-on-the-importance-of-moving-over-during-january-safety-campaign\/#:~:text=The%20Move%20Over%20Law%20was%20put%20into,Move%20Over%20Law%20and%20downloadable%20campaign%20materials.\">which originally went into effect back in 2002<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>FLHSMV &#8220;Move Over&#8221; law (Florida Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles)<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">In short: the law requires that drivers <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flhsmv.gov\/safety-center\/driving-safety\/move-over\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.flhsmv.gov\/safety-center\/driving-safety\/move-over\/\">move over a lane<\/a> when there are any of the following stopped on the side of the road:<\/p>\n<p>Emergency vehicles<\/p>\n<p>Service vehicles<\/p>\n<p>Utility vehicles<\/p>\n<p>Disabled vehicles (i.e. stopped on the road with <\/p>\n<p>Parked vehicles with hazard lights flashing<\/p>\n<p>Emergency flares<\/p>\n<p>Visible emergency signage<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">[BELOW: What\u2019s Florida\u2019s updated \u2018move over\u2019 law?]<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">But if you can\u2019t move over, then the rules dictate that you must instead slow down to 20 mph below the posted speed limit. <\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">According to the FLHSMV, the most likely group to violate the Move Over Act are drivers between the ages of 20 and 29.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">That can be a real problem, as violating the law <a href=\"https:\/\/www.leg.state.fl.us\/Statutes\/index.cfm?App_mode=Display_Statute&amp;URL=0300-0399\/0316\/Sections\/0316.126.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.leg.state.fl.us\/Statutes\/index.cfm?App_mode=Display_Statute&amp;URL=0300-0399\/0316\/Sections\/0316.126.html\">comes with penalties<\/a> like fines, fees and points on your driving record, state officials say.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">\u201cThe simple act of moving over gives law enforcement, emergency first responders and other service vehicles adequate space to do their jobs and can greatly increase safety on Florida\u2019s roadways,\u201d the FLHSMV explains.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">[BELOW: Is a car with hazard lights on considered part of the Move Over law in Florida?]<\/p>\n<p>Breaking News Alerts<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 bTVksG\">Get breaking news alerts delivered to your inbox.<\/p>\n<p>Copyright 2026 by WKMG ClickOrlando &#8211;
