ORLANDO, Fla. \u2013 A $100,000 contest to name John Morgan\u2019s new third party here in Florida<\/a> is officially wrapping up, though the reveal date is expected to come later this month.<\/p>\n

In a video statement earlier this year, the Orlando attorney declared that he wouldn\u2019t be running for office, though he touted his success with two constitutional campaigns: one for marijuana use<\/a> and the other for the minimum wage<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cSo I won\u2019t be running for governor,\u201d he continued. \u201cBut I do believe this: that most of us agree on most things. I\u2019ve found that with my amendments, if you take the D down and the R down, we agree on most things together.\u201d<\/p>\n

Early last year, Morgan announced that he was starting up a new political party in Florida<\/a>, claiming it would be \u201cfor those of us stuck in the middle.\u201d<\/p>\n

At the time, it wasn\u2019t clear what Morgan hoped to achieve with his new party, simply stating that his lawyer was drafting up the paperwork.<\/p>\n

But later, he revealed a contest to name the political party, with a $100,000 prize for the winner.<\/p>\n

THE COMPETITION<\/p>\n

The submission period officially came to a close on Tuesday, June 2.<\/p>\n

Now, entries are set to be judged based on three main factors:<\/p>\n

Appeal (4 points) \u2014 \u201cHow compelling and relatable is the proposed party name to a broad audience? A strong entry should resonate widely and inspire confidence.\u201d<\/p>\n

Creativity (3 points) \u2014 \u201cHow imaginative and inventive is the proposed political party name? Does it approach the contest theme in a fresh, unexpected way while remaining purposeful and grounded?\u201d<\/p>\n

Originality (3 points) \u2014 \u201cIs the proposed political party name genuinely new and distinct? It should stand as an independent idea.\u201d<\/p>\n

While the contest will officially end on June 14, the highest judging score won\u2019t be revealed until on or around June 16 at 1 p.m.<\/a>, according to the official rules.<\/p>\n

Afterward, the winner is expected to be notified on June 17.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf two or more entries submit the same party name and receive the same total score, the prize will be divided equally among them,\u201d the rules read.<\/p>\n

That said, entries were limited to one per person, and anyone caught violating that rule will be disqualified. <\/p>\n

WHAT WE KNOW SO FAR<\/p>\n

Morgan hasn\u2019t revealed much about what this new third party will be about, though the Orlando attorney has been vocal about his political beliefs in the past, and he spoke with News 6 during the 2024 election season to discuss some of the key political issues that he was pursuing.<\/p>\n

In line with his moniker as Florida\u2019s \u201cPot Daddy,\u201d<\/a> Morgan told News 6 that he was throwing his support behind Amendment 3<\/a>, which aimed to legalize recreational marijuana. However, the amendment proposal was ultimately struck down by voters during the general election.<\/p>\n

According to Morgan, his push for deregulating marijuana stems from his late brother, who had been injured in an accident at Disney years ago and used the drug to help treat his injury.<\/p>\n

The celebrity lawyer also talked about his support for then-President Joe Biden<\/a>, as well as his initial optimism about Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis.<\/p>\n

In 2019, DeSantis signed a bill legalizing the use of medicinal marijuana after calling on lawmakers to do so. But more recently, DeSantis came out against Amendment 3, claiming it would only help larger marijuana companies. As a result, Morgan said he became disillusioned with the governor.<\/p>\n

\u201cDeSantis says a few big marijuana companies that are footing the bill for this and got their foot in the door in Florida with medical marijuana are now going to make all the money on recreational marijuana,\u201d Morgan said at the time.<\/p>\n

Speaking from his vacation home in Maui, Morgan told News 6 that his latest initiative is not an announcement of a gubernatorial run but rather a push to create a centrist alternative in the state\u2019s political landscape.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe left is crazy. The right is crazy. We are in the middle,\u201d Morgan said in an interview.<\/p>\n

Morgan argued that Florida\u2019s political climate has become more focused on party labels than on issues.<\/p>\n

Jim Clark, a senior history lecturer at the University of Central Florida who passed away in October, originally said Morgan\u2019s influence in the state\u2019s political landscape makes his effort significant after last year\u2019s announcement.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere\u2019s as many independents and no-party-affiliation voters as there are Republicans,\u201d Clark said. \u201cJohn Morgan has a lot of influence. I think he wants to see the Democratic Party go back to what was successful for Barack Obama and Bill Clinton and get away from the far left.\u201d<\/p>\n

Despite his enthusiasm for the new movement, Morgan acknowledged the uncertainty of its success.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think there is a huge risk. I think it might not happen,\u201d Morgan said. \u201cBut if you don\u2019t try, if you don\u2019t take a moonshot, you never go to the moon.\u201d<\/p>\n

Last year, Morgan mentioned \u201cThe People\u2019s Party\u201d and \u201cThe Sunshine Party\u201d as potential names for his new party, though it remains to be seen what will ultimately be selected.<\/p>\n
