Miami Autism Dad Victor Antunez interviews Elizabeth Simonton, Co-Founder and CEO of ICU baby, the only organization in Miami-Dade County that comprehensively supports NICU families. The conversation starts in a chair next to her son’s NICU bed in 2014 and traces what she saw that she couldn’t unsee, and how that became a nonprofit serving NICU families across South Florida with parent mentors, NICU Packs, catered meals at the bedside, transportation stipends for families who can’t afford the gas to reach their baby, education resources in English, Spanish, and Haitian Creole, and bereavement support for the families nobody else knows how to comfort. Elizabeth breaks down what comprehensive support looks like at Holtz Children’s Hospital and South Miami Hospital, why the Miami-Dade preterm birth rate for Black women is almost 2 times the rate for white women, and what the NICU teaches a parent that becomes useful 5 years later in a developmental pediatrician’s office. The episode closes on the line ICU baby repeats 3 times on its homepage: babies should not be alone.
