When the officer arrived, they spoke with the victim who stated they were riding a bicycle with other friends by the intersection of SW Fears Avenue and SW Crenshaw Street.According to the police report, the group of bike riders observed a Black man screaming from his driveway located at 1931 SW Fears Avenue.The report notes the group of children rode past the residence on their bicycles when the man allegedly ran off the driveway with a baseball bat.According to the victim, the man, later identified as Stephens Jr., chased the boys down the street and \u201cattempted to swing the bat\u201d at the group of kids, which barely miss hitting one of the kids.The victim added they returned to Crenshaw Street where they called their parents.The officer then went to Stephens Jr.\u2019s residence where he found Stephens Jr. sitting on a plastic lawn chair with a wooden baseball bat on his lap.According to the report, the officer attempted to speak with Stephens Jr., but he was allegedly not listening to officers and continued using his cell phone while muttering to himself.Get the latest news updates with the WPBF 25 News app. You can download it here.After several requests by officers to Stephens Jr. to place the baseball bat on the ground, he complied.Your neighborhood: Local coverage from WPBF 25 NewsThe report states Stephens Jr. had a pair of scissors on his lap and placed it in his pocket. Officers requested Stephens Jr. several times to remove the scissors from his pocket and place the scissors on the ground.At one point, an officer said they unholstered a Taser and turned it on, but did not point the taser at Stephens Jr.Stephens Jr. eventually placed the scissors on the ground and continued to not speak with officers.The report states that Stephens Jr. was detained by being placed in handcuffs and moved to the back of an officer\u2019s patrol car and was seat-belted.The report notes that Stephens Jr. may suffer from mental illness.
