When Rep. Toby Overdorf leaves his seat representing House District 85 this year due to term limits, he wants fellow Republican Anthony Bonna to have it next.<\/p>\n

Overdorf this week endorsed Bonna, a Port St. Lucie Council member, in the race for HD 85<\/a>, which straddles Martin and St. Lucie counties from Palm City to Port St. Lucie.<\/p>\n

He called Bonna \u201ca consistent force for the Republican Party of Florida and the people of St. Lucie County.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThrough his private and public service, he has demonstrated a consistent willingness to serve,\u201d Overdorf said in a statement.<\/p>\n

\u201cToday, I am proud to fully endorse and support him to succeed me in District 85.\u201d<\/p>\n

Bonna, who was\u00a0the first candidate to file<\/a>\u00a0for the race back in February 2025, welcomed the nod.<\/p>\n

\u201cToby has been a strong advocate for lower taxes and fees, fighting human trafficking, and protecting Florida\u2019s natural resources,\u201d he said. \u201cI am honored to have his endorsement and support.\u201d<\/p>\n

A real estate and marketing professional, Bonna has served on the Port St. Lucie City Council since winning his District 3 seat in 2021 and previously served on the St. Lucie County Commission, following an appointment by then-Gov.\u00a0Rick Scott\u00a0in 2018.<\/p>\n

He holds a degree in finance from Georgetown University and has served on regional planning, public safety, and education boards. He was also one of Florida\u2019s 30 presidential electors in the 2024 Electoral College and chairs the Florida GOP\u2019s State Committeeman and Committeewoman Caucus.<\/p>\n

Overdorf\u2019s endorsement adds to a list of Bonna\u2019s backers that includes\u00a0Associated Industries of Florida<\/a>,\u00a0Florida Realtors PAC<\/a>, Americans for Prosperity<\/a>, Florida Right to Life PAC, the Police Benevolent Association, St. Lucie County Sheriff\u00a0Richard Del Toro, State Attorney\u00a0Tom Bakkedahl and several local elected officials.<\/p>\n

All four of Bonna\u2019s Port St. Lucie Council colleagues \u2014 Mayor\u00a0Shannon Martin, Vice Mayor\u00a0Jolien Caraballo, and Commissioners\u00a0Stephanie Morgan\u00a0and\u00a0David Pickett\u00a0\u2014 have also backed his campaign.<\/p>\n

Bonna is the only Republican candidate in the HD 85, after his only Republican Primary opponent, Thomas Colter, dropped out of the contest.<\/p>\n

Democrat\u00a0Rainer Wayne Richter\u00a0is also running.<\/p>\n

The Primary Election is on Aug. 18, followed by the General Election on Nov. 3.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"When Rep.
