U.S. Geological Survey map<\/a>. There were dozens of reports of shaking throughout the South Florida region.<\/p>\nMultiple buildings in Miami were apparently evacuated due to shaking, including Miami-Dade\u2019s Stephen P. Clark Government Center and the Dadeland Metrorail Station.<\/p>\n
Miami Fire Rescue received multiple calls for service in several parts of the city, the city said in a statement Monday afternoon. No significant injuries or property damage were reported, and all calls were handled without issue.<\/p>\n
Maria Moncayo, who works at a law office in downtown Fort Lauderdale, said she had been quietly working at her desk when she started to feel a vibrating sensation. She compared it to someone doing construction in another part of the building, and it lasted about a minute or so.<\/p>\n
\u201cI have a little pendant dangling in my desk, and it was moving,\u201d Moncayo said. \u201cThat\u2019s why I realized that it\u2019s actually not me or my chair or anything.\u201d<\/p>\n
Moncayo said she had experienced several earthquakes while living in Ecuador, including a 7.8 magnitude earthquake that left hundreds dead in 2016. But she hadn\u2019t experienced one since moving to Florida seven years ago.<\/p>\n
\u201cSince I moved here, it kind of left my mind, but when I felt my desk moving, I thought it was going to be like Ecuador,\u201d Moncayo said. \u201cIt kind of gave me flashbacks, but then I realized that it\u2019s not bad, it\u2019s just a little one.\u201d<\/p>\n
In tweets on social media, Florida residents described what they felt on Monday:<\/p>\n
\u201cI felt it in Golden Oak, near Disney World. The house rattled and felt a subtle and very brief swaying,\u201d wrote Susan Varney.<\/p>\n
Amy Potts Alegi wrote: \u201cWe felt it on Siesta Key! Lots of shaking. 2 waves!\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cPalm Bay, was sitting in my computer chair and felt it. Wasn\u2019t dramatic but I felt it,\u201d wrote Jaysen Taylor.<\/p>\n
In Cuba, the tremor was felt in the province of Pinar del R\u00edo, along with Havana.<\/p>\n
Flavia Pupo, a manager at the Pinar del R\u00edo hotel, described how the building shook, causing some fear.<\/p>\n
\u201cEveryone here is OK,\u201d she said by telephone. \u201cThe people on the street are a little bit scared.\u201d<\/p>\n
The USGS said the quake was unusual given that, unlike most such tremors, it didn\u2019t occur along tectonic plate boundaries. The shaking was felt more than 300 miles from the quake\u2019s epicenter.<\/p>\n
The Oriente fault zone is located just off Cuba\u2019s southeast coast and has unleashed damaging earthquakes in recent centuries, including a 7.7 magnitude quake on January 2020 in open waters that caused damage in Cuba and the Cayman Islands.<\/p>\n
There was no tsunami warning from Monday\u2019s quake, NWS Miami said.<\/p>\n
