Residents say it’s a “step in right direction.”

NASSAU COUNTY, Fla. — Nassau County commissioners have approved a temporary pause on new data center projects following a final public hearing that drew strong opinions from residents.

After hearing public comment, commissioners unanimously approved a 12-month moratorium to study how large-scale data center facilities could impact the county’s water supply, power grid and environment. The measure is not a ban, but a temporary step to allow time for research and future regulations.

This story continues below.

Rachel Stillwell, a Nassau County wife and mother, urged commissioners to proceed cautiously.

“I’m just a mom and I want better for my kids,” Stillwell told First Coast News after the meeting.

Stillwell was among several residents who voiced concern about the potential long-term effects of data center development on families and future generations.

During the hearing, one speaker questioned the commissioners, asking, “Does anyone in this room want to live next to a data center?”

Others expressed support for the moratorium.

“I’m really glad. I think it’s a step in the right direction,” said Nassau County resident Allison Wolfe.

Under the moratorium, county staff will conduct a comprehensive review of potential impacts, including groundwater usage tied to the Aquifer, electrical grid demands, land use compatibility and environmental concerns such as noise, lighting and effects on wetlands and wildlife.

“I’m just afraid it’s going to affect our agriculture and nature. Our resources, our God-given right to raise our children in a healthy environment,” said resident Monica Monk.

Others argued the moratorium does not go far enough.

“It’s a step, but I feel like it’s lipstick on a pig,” said resident Rachel Devoe. “What’s really going to change in a year? I don’t think anyone really wants this.”

“I’m very grateful that they’re taking the time,” said Stillwell, “I am a little concerned. A moratorium is temporary. I hope at minimum they take our concerns seriously.”

The county’s fact-finding committee on data center development is scheduled to hold a public meeting at 5p.m. Tuesday at West Nassau High School.
