MIAMI (WSVN) – A City of Miami Police officer was rushed to the hospital following a violent crash in the Little Havana neighborhood that left him trapped inside his cruiser.<\/p>\n
Miami Police officials said an officer who was responding to an emergency call was T-boned by a gray SUV.<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019m going to use my car to remove the vehicle that\u2019s trapping the officer,\u201d said a first responder in radio transmissions.<\/p>\n
Investigators said the crash happened at the intersection of Southwest Seventh Street and 12th Avenue, at around 3:20 a.m. on Sunday.<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019m with him. He\u2019s alert and conscious,\u201d said a first responder in radio transmissions. \u201cStart shutting down the streets. Establish a corridor to the hospital.\u201d<\/p>\n
The cruiser and the SUV both sustained extensive damage.<\/p>\n
Witness John Randin described how the scene unfolded.<\/p>\n
\u201cI was trailing behind the gentleman who struck the police officer, and it was a green light, and the cop went straight through the intersection with his lights on, but like I said, it was green, and unfortunately, the gentleman struck him,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Randin contacted 911 and checked on the officer, who sat trapped in his patrol car.<\/p>\n
\u201cI got out of the car, called 911 real quick. The officer seemed like he was in pain, but I signaled to him, like, \u2018I\u2019m on the phone.\u2019 I was standing in front of the patrol car, and he gave me the thumbs up like \u2018thank you for calling,’\u201d said Randin.<\/p>\n
First responders extricated the officer after tearing the roof off his cruiser.<\/p>\n
Detectives said the driver of the gray SUV stayed at the scene.<\/p>\n
\u201cI started shutting down the streets to establish a corridor to the hospital,\u201d said a first responder in radio transmissions.<\/p>\n
Paramedics transported the injured officer to Jackson Memorial Hospital\u2019s Ryder Trauma Center. Officials said he may have suffered multiple fractures.<\/p>\n
As of Monday morning, the officer is listed as stable, but officials said he faces a long road to recovery.<\/p>\n
The damaged cruiser and SUV were towed hours later.<\/p>\n
Investigators have not released any information about the driver of the gray SUV. No charges have been filed against him as of Monday afternoon, as police continue to investigate this crash.<\/p>\n
