Polling places could change"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">DUVAL COUNTY, Fla.  \u2013 Thousands of Duval County voters could soon find themselves heading to a new polling location \u2014 and the change could come sooner than you might think.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">Duval County Supervisor of Elections Jerry Holland is set to go before Jacksonville City Council to seek approval for changes to several polling locations across the county. The move is required by state law whenever polling locations are changed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">\u201cBy state law, whenever we make a polling location change, we must go to the council for approval,\u201d Holland said.<\/p>\n<p>Why locations could change<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">Holland said the changes are driven by a mix of renovations and polling sites that simply no longer want to participate.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">\u201cIt is difficult to find polling locations because you\u2019re asking a location to give up part of their building for 14 hours on election day,\u201d Holland said. \u201cAnd sometimes that\u2019s difficult and very awkward for them to have us being visitors during that period of time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">He said the county has 160 polling locations, and eight are affected by the proposed changes. The impacted sites are spread across Arlington, the north side, the southeast part of the county and the west side.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">\u201cIt happens probably every election cycle that we get usually one or two,\u201d Holland said. \u201cIt\u2019s been so long since we\u2019ve had an election county-wide \u2014 which was 2024 \u2014 that\u2019s why we have so many this time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Who could be impacted<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">Holland estimates roughly 30,000 voters will be affected \u2014 about 5% of Duval County\u2019s 642,000 registered voters.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">Of the eight changes, some are permanent and others are temporary. Temporary changes are tied to ongoing building renovations.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">\u201cTemporary means we have to find another location for the August election because they\u2019re renovating the building and they just can\u2019t have us in there while they\u2019re doing renovations,\u201d Holland said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">The permanent changes will take effect beginning with the Aug. 18 primary and carry forward through the November election.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">You can see a list of the locations below: <\/p>\n<p>Proposed polling place changes in Duval County (City of Jacksonville)What voters should do<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">Holland said voters don\u2019t need to take action right away \u2014 but should watch their mailboxes once the council signs off.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">\u201cAs soon as the City Council has approved it, you don\u2019t have to worry until then, but then we\u2019ll send out a new voter information card,\u201d Holland said. \u201cSo when you receive that card, you\u2019ll know your polling location has changed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">He noted that while some voters may find the new location is farther away, others could end up with a more convenient option.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">\u201cSometimes we\u2019ll change the lines and then sometimes we actually change the physical location,\u201d Holland said.<\/p>\n<p>What\u2019s next<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">The proposal will receive its first reading before the City Council, where public comment will be accepted. It will then go to committee before returning to the full council for a final vote.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">Holland added that early voting sites are largely unaffected.
