Bryan Armetta offers up a preview, prediction and pick for Tuesday\u2019s MLB game between the Boston Red Sox and Tampa Bay Rays.<\/p>\n

Two rivals headed in opposite directions will meet in the Sunshine State tonight. The Red Sox (27-37) currently reside in last place, stuck behind four other American League East clubs. Despite quality pitching, an anemic offense has doomed Boston this season. As for the Rays (38-25), it\u2019s been a miraculous 2026 campaign. However, Tampa Bay has now lost ten of its last 14 games. Can the AL East leaders earn a much-needed series victory on Tuesday?<\/p>\n

The Red Sox are favorites (-120)<\/a> over the Red Sox, with the over\/under set at 7.5 runs<\/a>. Below, I\u2019ve laid out my preview, prediction, and best bet for Tuesday\u2019s showdown between Boston and Tampa Bay on DraftKings Sportsbook<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Red Sox vs. Rays pick, best bet<\/p>\n

Red Sox ML (-120):<\/a> Despite their lopsided records, the visitors have the edge in this one. Tolle is already a problem for batters, especially a Rays squad that struggles against lefties. Martinez, while solid, has gotten fortunate when it comes to his expected numbers. Boston has been a better offense on the road compared to at home.<\/p>\n

Red Sox vs. Rays prediction, preview<\/p>\n

He\u2019s only 23 years old, but Payton Tolle is already one of the American League\u2019s best arms. Over 47.1 innings of work, the rookie has recorded a 2.28 ERA, 0.97 WHIP and 51 strikeouts (9.7 K\/9). He hasn\u2019t allowed more than three earned runs in each of his eight starts. Among those outings, he tossed a five-inning, one-run gem against Tampa Bay on May 10th. A look under the hood suggests that the youngster\u2019s success is no fluke. Tolle ranks within the top 82nd percentile in xERA (2.32), xBA (.191), strikeout rate (27.3%) and barrel rate (4.9%).<\/p>\n

As previously mentioned, Tolle has had some success against tonight\u2019s opponent. Still, the AL East leaders remain a threat at the plate. Tampa Bay is averaging 4.81 runs per game at home, seventh-most in baseball. However, this lineup is somewhat top heavy. Yandy Diaz (159 wRC+), Junior Caminero (143 wRC+) and Jonathan Aranda (131 wRC+) are the only regulars with a wRC+ above 100 this season. The Rays are worse against southpaws, recording the league\u2019s 11th-worst OPS against left-handed pitching (.680). Tampa Bay ranks last in expected slugging (.365), hard-hit rate (34.3%) and barrel rate (5.2%).<\/p>\n

On the other side, Nick Martinez will make his 13th start of the season. Over 70.2 innings of work, he\u2019s posted a 2.29 ERA, 1.19 WHIP and 42 strikeouts (5.3 K\/9). Despite the lack of K\u2019s, the veteran remains effective thanks to an ability to induce weak contact. However, it\u2019s worth noting that he\u2019s a major regression candidate. Martinez\u2019s 4.53 xERA and .283 xBA all suggest that he\u2019s gotten fairly lucky over the past two months. Still, the right-hander has done a masterful job of not beating himself. His 4.5% walk rate ranks within the top 97th percentile among qualified pitchers.<\/p>\n

Martinez doesn\u2019t need to be at his best in order to take down Tuesday\u2019s competition. The Red Sox have been a mess at the plate, averaging an American League-worst 3.91 runs per game. To make matters worse, outfielder Roman Anthony is sidelined due to a finger injury. However, they\u2019re tied for 12th in the majors with 4.48 runs per game on the road. Martinez has thrown some combination of a sinker, changeup or cutter on 80% of his pitches. Against those three pitches, Boston batters own a .276 expected batting average and .332 expected on-base percentage.<\/p>\n

Best Bet: Red Sox ML (-120)<\/a><\/p>\n

For as bad as the Red Sox have been, there\u2019s reason for optimism this evening. After all, Tolle is a tough assignment for any batter, especially a top-heavy Rays club that doesn\u2019t hit lefties. As for the Red Sox, their advanced metrics at the plate line up nicely against the soft-tossing Martinez. Coming into this one as slight favorites, I\u2019ll back the visitors tonight.<\/p>\n
