{"id":302057,"date":"2026-06-10T01:51:17","date_gmt":"2026-06-10T01:51:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/302057\/"},"modified":"2026-06-10T01:51:17","modified_gmt":"2026-06-10T01:51:17","slug":"steve-gallons-seat-on-miami-dade-school-board-opens-up","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/302057\/","title":{"rendered":"Steve Gallon\u2019s seat on Miami-Dade school board opens up"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>            <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"responsive-image\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/IMG_MIA_Superintendent_M_4_1_BOOE884K_L806968522.JPG\"   width=\"1200\" height=\"674\" title=\"Miami-Dade School Board Member Steve Gallon III resigned his seat on the school board to take a position on the Miami-Dade County Commission. \" alt=\"Miami-Dade School Board Member Steve Gallon III resigned his seat on the school board to take a position on the Miami-Dade County Commission. \"\/><\/p>\n<p>        Miami-Dade School Board Member Steve Gallon III resigned his seat on the school board to take a position on the Miami-Dade County Commission. <\/p>\n<p>            Miami Herald Staff<\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s a new vacancy on Miami-Dade County Public School\u2019s governing board.<\/p>\n<p>District 1 School Board Member Steve Gallon resigned from his seat representing much of the northernmost stretch of Miami-Dade County on Monday, <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"Follow nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.miamidade.gov\/global\/release.page?Mduid_release=rel1781029447278284\">setting up an election to fill his seat<\/a> for the remaining two-plus years in his term.<\/p>\n<p>Gallon, 57, is now set to represent District 1 on the Miami-Dade County Commission, as he was <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"Follow nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.miamiherald.com\/news\/local\/community\/miami-dade\/article316061019.html\">the only candidate to file for that seat<\/a> \u2014 he will fill the seat recently vacated by Oliver Gilbert, who is now <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"Follow nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.miamiherald.com\/news\/politics-government\/article316010460.html\">running for Congress and will give up his seat<\/a> representing the Miami Gardens area in January.<\/p>\n<p>Prospective candidates to replace Gallon have a tight window to file for the office. According to a notice from Florida Secretary of State Cord Byrd, the qualifying dates to run for the office stretch from noon on June 10 to noon on June 16.<\/p>\n<p>Four other school board seats are on-cycle for re-election to their four-year terms this year. The deadline to file for those seats \u2014 Districts 2, 4, 6 and 8. \u2014 ends Friday at noon.<\/p>\n<p>As of Tuesday evening, only the incumbent board members had filed for election to those district seats.<\/p>\n<p>Those board members are Dorothy Bendross-Mindingall, Roberto Alonso, Chair Mari Tere Rojas and Vice Chair Monica Colucci. All <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"Follow nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.voterfocus.com\/CampaignFinance\/candidate_pr.php?c=miamidade\">four members have raised significant funds towards their elections<\/a>, with three having raised more than $100,000 as of March 31.<\/p>\n<p>The primary election is set for Aug. 18 and the general election will be held Nov. 3.
