Soon after, code enforcement posted a notice on her door giving her 10 days to remove the birds or face fines.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">\u201cMy 15-year-old son brought the notice and he was very emotional and very nervous,\u201d Feist said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">Feist took her concerns to the Casselberry City Commission, where she says supporters also signed petitions and spoke out in favor of allowing backyard hens.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">Monday night, commissioners unanimously directed staff to draft an ordinance for consideration and agreed to withhold enforcement action while the issue is reviewed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">\u201cThis is a major step forward,\u201d Feist wrote on social media following the meeting. \u201cIt means the City is officially moving forward with creating a framework that would allow residents to legally keep hens in Casselberry.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">News 6 reached out to Casselberry City Manager Randy Newman, who said backyard hens are currently prohibited under city code, but commissioners are expected to revisit the issue at a future meeting, possibly as soon as June 22.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">Supporters note that unincorporated Seminole County already allows up to four hens, and nearby Longwood has its own backyard chicken program.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">\u201cWe\u2019re not asking for special treatment,\u201d Feist said. \u201cWe would just like some clear regulations that everyone can understand and abide by.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">Feist\u2019s next-door neighbor Miguel Valdes said the hens are quiet and that they appreciate the free eggs.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">\u201cAnything we can do as a society to help people become more self-sustaining, I think should be encouraged,\u201d Valdes said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">Carl Brown, who lives nearby, said he had no idea anyone in the neighborhood even had chickens.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">\u201cI don\u2019t have a problem with chickens,\u201d Brown said. \u201cWe have kids and dogs in the neighborhood, and I feel like they\u2019re more crazy than chickens.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">For now, Feist and her family are waiting to see whether city leaders ultimately decide to allow backyard hens within city limits.<\/p>\n<p>Breaking News Alerts<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 bTVksG\">Get breaking news alerts delivered to your inbox.<\/p>\n<p>Copyright 2026 by WKMG ClickOrlando &#8211;
