{"id":302149,"date":"2026-06-10T03:34:10","date_gmt":"2026-06-10T03:34:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/302149\/"},"modified":"2026-06-10T03:34:10","modified_gmt":"2026-06-10T03:34:10","slug":"south-florida-firefighters-honored-for-saving-boys-life","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/302149\/","title":{"rendered":"South Florida firefighters honored for saving boy\u2019s life"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph\">LAUDERDALE-BY-THE-SEA, Fla.  \u2014 Two South Florida first responders were honored <a href=\"https:\/\/www.local10.com\/news\/local\/2026\/06\/08\/off-duty-first-responders-from-miami-dade-broward-help-save-5-year-olds-life\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.local10.com\/news\/local\/2026\/06\/08\/off-duty-first-responders-from-miami-dade-broward-help-save-5-year-olds-life\/\">for saving a young boy\u2019s life<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Broward Fire Rescue\u2019s Broderick Espinoza and Miami-Dade Fire Rescue Lt. Jesus Fuentes were recognized during Tuesday night\u2019s Lauderdale-by-the-Sea commission meeting for their quick actions following a near-drowning during Memorial Day weekend.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cI\u2019m just truly blessed that he\u2019s alive and well, here with us,\u201d said Espinoza. \u201cHonestly it was all a blur, I was just really focused. I didn\u2019t really know anyone was around us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Body camera footage captured the frantic moments after 5-year-old Tyler Nelson was pulled from a pool at the Plunge Beach Resort on May 24. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">At the time, Tyler had no pulse so the off-duty Espinoza immediately started CPR.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Fuentes and two off-duty nurses also jumped in to help.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Within minutes, Tyler regained a pulse and started to breathe again.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cIt\u2019s just a humbling experience,\u201d said Fuentes. \u201cAt the end of the day, we didn\u2019t do anything that anybody with our training wouldn\u2019t do. Our training just took over.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Tyler spent two days in the ICU before being released with a clean bill of health.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">His mother said she would forever be grateful to those who saved her son\u2019s life.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cThey\u2019re angels, they allowed God to literally use them to be a vessel to save my son,\u201d said Markita Pittman-Nelson. \u201cI mean, two firefighters and two nurses, what more could a person ask for.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Added Fuentes: \u201cI understand it as a parent myself, I understand how emotional it is for her to still have Tyler around and how grateful she is to us. Like I said, at the end of the day, it\u2019s nothing that we think of.
