DELTONA, Fla. \u2013 Amazon opened a new, first-of-its-kind distribution center in Deltona on Wednesday, a move company officials say will help streamline deliveries across Central Florida while adding hundreds of jobs.<\/p>\n
It\u2019s a single distribution center.<\/p>\n
The 1 million-square-foot facility is expected to employ about 500 people. Company leaders said the site will house the top 50,000 best-selling items for the region \u2014 including toilet paper, paper towels and detergent \u2014 to help keep nearby fulfillment centers stocked.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis is a fulfillment center for fulfillment centers,\u201d said Ben Krzeminski, an Amazon representative. At the ribbon-cutting event, he described the operation as a hub that replenishes other sites with high-demand products.<\/p>\n
Inside, the company showcased automated equipment designed to move and sort packages quickly. Amazon said robots can scan labels and direct packages through the system to speed processing.<\/p>\n
Officials said the facility is built to handle high volume, processing millions of units each day. They also pointed to frequent warning beeps heard on the floor, saying the sounds are part of safety measures meant to increase awareness around moving equipment.<\/p>\n
Amazon also announced plans for a second facility next door. An existing fulfillment center is already located across the street.<\/p>\n
