(CBS12)  \u2014 A man accused of crashing into a <a href=\"https:\/\/cbs12.com\/topic\/Hollywood%2C%20Florida\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Hollywood police<\/a> officer\u2019s patrol car at high speed and then running away has been arrested weeks later in <a href=\"https:\/\/cbs12.com\/topic\/Chicago%2CIllinois%2CUnited%20States\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Chicago<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The Hollywood Police Department said that the crash happened just after midnight on May 20 near Hollywood Boulevard and North Ocean Drive. According to police, an officer was driving north on North Ocean Drive when a <a href=\"https:\/\/cbs12.com\/topic\/BMW\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">BMW<\/a>, going more than 100 miles per hour, suddenly crossed the median and slammed into the patrol vehicle.<\/p>\n<p>The impact was severe enough to send the officer to the hospital with serious injuries. Police said those injuries were not life-threatening, and the officer is now recovering.<\/p>\n<p>After the crash, investigators say the driver didn\u2019t stay at the scene. Instead, he ran off on foot, leaving behind the wrecked BMW. Detectives later identified the suspect as Artiom Echiusciu.<\/p>\n<p>Police say he didn\u2019t get far on foot, he allegedly used a Lyft ride to get out of the immediate area in an attempt to avoid being caught. As detectives continued to piece together the case using investigative tools and technology, they learned Echiusciu had left Florida altogether and fled to Chicago.<\/p>\n<p>Hollywood police then teamed up with federal law enforcement to track him down. On June 10, nearly three weeks after the crash, Echiusciu was located and arrested in Chicago by the U.S. Marshals Service Great Lakes Regional Fugitive Task Force.<\/p>\n<p>See also: <a href=\"https:\/\/cbs12.com\/news\/cbs12-news-i-team\/your-tax-dollars-will-pay-lawyers-to-defend-possibly-unconstitutional-florida-congressional-map-taxpayers-desantis-challenge-lawsuits-bill-legal-fight-expenses-election-update-supervisor-elections-redistricting-\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Florida redistricting fight puts taxpayers on the hook for legal costs<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Authorities said Echiusciu is in the United States illegally from Russia.<\/p>\n<p>He now faces several charges, including:<\/p>\n<p>Leaving the scene of a crash involving serious bodily injuryReckless driving causing serious bodily injuryReckless driving causing property damageDriving with a suspended licenseLeaving the scene of a crash involving property damageFailure to register a motor vehicle<\/p>\n<p>Hollywood detectives said they are now working to have him extradited to <a href=\"https:\/\/cbs12.com\/topic\/Broward%20County\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Broward County,<\/a> where he is expected to face those charges.<\/p>\n<p>Police also thanked the agencies involved in the case, including the Broward State Attorney\u2019s Office and federal partners, for helping quickly locate and arrest the suspect.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, the injured officer continues to recover, with police noting support from the community following the crash.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"HOLLYWOOD, Fla.
