FLORIDA – A new national transportation safety study has identified the Tampa Bay region as one of the most hazardous metropolitan areas in the country for people traveling on foot.<\/p>\n
According to Smart Growth America’s 2026 Dangerous by Design report, the Tampa St. Petersburg Clearwater metropolitan area ranked eighth among the 101 largest metro areas in the United States for pedestrian deaths. <\/p>\n
The report found that 618 pedestrians were killed in traffic related incidents throughout the region between 2020 and 2024, resulting in an annual fatality rate of 3.74 deaths per 100,000 residents.<\/p>\n
The study analyzed federal traffic safety data collected over a five year period and evaluated metropolitan areas based on pedestrian fatality rates. <\/p>\n
Tampa Bay was the highest ranked metro area in Florida among the nation’s top 10 most dangerous regions for pedestrians.<\/p>\n
Several other Florida metro areas also appeared near the top of the rankings. <\/p>\n
Palm Bay Melbourne Titusville ranked second nationally, while Deltona Daytona Beach Ormond Beach, North Port Bradenton Sarasota, Jacksonville, Miami Fort Lauderdale West Palm Beach, Lakeland Winter Haven, Orlando Kissimmee Sanford and Cape Coral Fort Myers were also included among the most dangerous metro areas for pedestrian safety.<\/p>\n
Researchers attributed many pedestrian deaths to roadway designs that prioritize vehicle movement over pedestrian access. <\/p>\n
The report cited factors such as wide roadways, higher speed limits, long crossing distances and limited pedestrian infrastructure as contributing elements in fatal crashes.<\/p>\n
The findings highlight ongoing concerns about roadway safety across Florida, which accounted for nine of the nation’s 27 most dangerous metropolitan areas for pedestrians. <\/p>\n
Transportation advocates continue to call for roadway improvements, enhanced pedestrian crossings and traffic calming measures aimed at reducing fatalities and serious injuries.<\/p>\n
