In 2025, Florida ranked seventh among the top 10 states with the highest number of mail carrier dog bite incidents, counting 183 cases in the latest USPS release. Jacksonville ranked as the thirdmost impacted city in Florida and 18th nationally. \u00a0Since 2023, Florida has consistently ranked nationally among other states with the highest number of reported dog bite incidents involving mail carriers.<\/a><\/p>\n The USPS has provided tips to prevent or defend against dog bite attacks, and mail carriers go through extensive safety training.<\/p>\n How USPS carriers prevent dog bites:<\/p>\n Announcing entry by making a non-threatening sound announcing their presence in the yard<\/p>\n Maintaining visual contact by never startling an animal and always keeping an eye on the dog<\/p>\n Assume the dog holds potential risk to attack every time. Avoid feeding or petting any animal<\/p>\n Blocking the exits by securing outward-swinging doors with a foot to prevent a pet from escaping<\/p>\n Unless the carrier feels safe to deliver to a dog owner\u2019s house, mail service can be suspended, and the owner\u2019s mail will have to be personally picked up from the post office<\/p>\n Owners must manage their dogs during delivery times to prevent incidents. Residents could be held liable for covering the carrier\u2019s expenses such as medical care, replacement clothing, and lost shifts.<\/p>\n Katherine Espinales was a local delivery driver who experienced a dog bite attack on her first day of work.<\/p>\n \u201cYes, owners need to watch their dogs but also make sure their shots are up to date. It can easily become a bigger issue over time. As I was approaching the customer\u2019s porch, the neighbor\u2019s dog ran from one yard to the other and bit the back of my ankle causing me to fall and visit the ER as soon as possible,\u201d Espinales said. \u201cI was more concerned about what health concerns it could lead to more than the actual bite.\u201d<\/p>\n USPS offers tools like a free Informed Delivery feature where customers can preview incoming mail and packages digitally from their mobile devices, tablets and computers. Carriers are also provided with awareness tools to be warned of potential future attacks, such as hand-held scanners with built-in dog warning alerts.<\/p>\n To report a dog attack locally in Jacksonville, call 911 for immediate medical emergencies or if the dog is still on the loose.
