Miami-Dade deputies say a dispute over an unpaid narcotics debt led to a deadly bus stop assault in South Miami-Dade on June 2, 2026.<\/p>\n
A fight over a drug-deal debt ended in a man being beaten to death at a South Miami-Dade bus stop, according to the Sheriff\u2019s Office.<\/p>\n
On June 2, James Thompson, 57, was arguing with a man over a \u201cmonetary debt from a previous narcotics\u2019 transaction\u201d at a market on Homestead Avenue, according to his arrest affidavit.<\/p>\n
The man walked away, but Thompson followed and harassed him, deputies say. They eventually reached the bus stop at 173rd Street and Transit Way, where Thompson began to \u201crepeatedly punch the victim in the face,\u201d his arrest affidavit reads.<\/p>\n
The man fell back, and Thompson continued to kick him, deputies say. As the man lay unconscious, Thompson began to search through his things, taking at least one item from his backpack before fleeing on foot, according to the report.<\/p>\n
Miami-Dade Fire Rescue took the man to Jackson South Medical Center, where he died just before 6 p.m. The Medical Examiner\u2019s Office ruled his death a homicide the next day. The victim\u2019s name was not included in Thompson\u2019s arrest report.<\/p>\n
A few days later, Thompson was arrested on unrelated charges. On Thursday, he was taken to the Miami-Dade Sheriff\u2019s Office Homicide Bureau, where deputies say he confessed.<\/p>\n
Miami-Dade County jail records show that, along with a second-degree murder charge, Thompson is charged with carrying a firearm as a convicted felon; cocaine possession with a firearm; manufacturing, selling, delivering or possessing cannabis with the intent to sell, while armed; resisting an officer without violence; grand theft auto; criminal mischief; and armed robbery.<\/p>\n
He remained jailed at the Miami-Dade County Pre-Trial Detention Center as of Friday afternoon. He is being represented by the Miami-Dade Public Defender\u2019s Office.<\/p>\n
