The Key Biscayne Community Compost Program, run by A Zero Waste Culture, was launched in 2020. Its mission is to divert food scraps and other organics from landfill, reduce methane emissions and create nutrient-rich soil.<\/p>\n
Members collect food scraps during the week and bring them on Saturdays to the Farmers Market at Key Biscayne Community Church, 355 Glenridge Rd.<\/p>\n
Below is the environmental impact of the Island\u2019s composting efforts:<\/p>\n
\u2022 1,466 pounds of food scraps collected this past week<\/p>\n
\u2022 401,572 pounds collected so far, or 200.79 tons<\/p>\n
\u2022 130.51 metric tons of greenhouse gases prevented from entering the atmosphere<\/p>\n
That equates to:<\/p>\n
\u2022 331,498 miles driven<\/p>\n
\u2022 10.53 million smartphone charges<\/p>\n
\u2022 2,175 trees helping clean the air for 10 years<\/p>\n
