Dear Families and Children of Key Biscayne K8,<\/p>\n
It is with a full heart, and no small amount of soul-searching, that I write to share some important news.<\/p>\n
After 25 years in the classroom, I have made the decision to retire early.<\/p>\n
Teaching your children has been one of the greatest privileges of my life. Each day, I was reminded why I chose this profession. It was because of your children\u2019s curiosity, laughter, breakthroughs, and yes, even their hardest days. What never lost its appeal was witnessing children of every ability and background teach each other things no curriculum ever could. That I will carry with me always.<\/p>\n
I would not be honest with you, something I have always tried to model, if I did not share why I am leaving sooner than I had planned.<\/p>\n
This letter is not political. I am writing simply as a teacher who has spent decades in the same classrooms your children sit in every day. I do not blame any parent for seeking the best education for their child. When a system consistently fails to meet a child\u2019s needs, seeking an alternative is not a betrayal of public education, it is an act of love. I understand it. I respect it.<\/p>\n
I no longer believe the public school system, as it currently stands, is built to serve each child well. After 25 years of trying to work within its constraints, I find I cannot, in good conscience, continue to deliver a one-size-fits-all curriculum driven by standardized testing. A system that too often measures compliance instead of growth and data rather than the full, beautiful complexity of a child.<\/p>\n
I want to be clear: the issue is not the dedicated administrators at our school. I have seen many of them care deeply, yet remain constrained by district mandates, state directives and funding structures that leave little room for flexible, child-centered decisions. The problem is not the people closest to our children. The problem is the system above them.<\/p>\n
I am also troubled by the growing reliance on educational software. These platforms are purchased at great cost and used for hours each week, yet the evidence that they meaningfully improve learning is thin. What children need most cannot be delivered through a screen. It requires human connection, responsive teaching and relationships no app can replicate.<\/p>\n
Equally concerning is how we serve our most vulnerable students. Children with disabilities and the lowest-performing students are too often grouped together under generalized models of \u201csupport.\u201d Students with IEPs, designed to meet individual needs, are frequently given the same interventions, regardless of their unique profiles. The disconnect between individualized plans and standardized reality is something we should no longer tolerate.<\/p>\n
Our school buildings also tell another disheartening story. Many are in disrepair. Mold, leaks and outdated equipment are not uncommon. The condition of a school sends a message to every child about how much they are valued and it is not a message I am willing to continue reinforcing.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, teachers face rising expectations and shrinking support. Each year brings more demands for documentation, data, compliance, while time and resources for actual teaching diminish. Many excellent teachers have left and many more are close. This is not sustainable, and our children ultimately bear the cost.<\/p>\n
Your children are not test scores. They never were. Each child deserves an education built around who they are \u2014 their strengths, their needs, their potential. I fought for that every day. I am stepping away because I can no longer do so within the constraints I am given.<\/p>\n
This is not goodbye to hope. I remain genuinely optimistic about what is possible. Real change will only come when parents and communities demand better. You are the most powerful force in your child\u2019s education. Ask hard questions. Stay engaged. Show up.<\/p>\n
