The council, with one no vote, opted to apply the funds through a tax credit rather than mailing out checks. Some residents at the meeting said they preferred a check, but council members and staff said that process would be costly. <\/p>\n

The dispute began five years ago when the city sued Waste Pro in 2021, claiming the company failed to provide services and left residents with piles of trash lined up for months. Waste Pro blamed the issues on staffing shortages caused by the pandemic. <\/p>\n
Port St. Lucie City Council, in a special meeting on Friday, April 10 that lasted less than four minutes, approved the settlement<\/a>. The trial was to begin three days later. <\/p>\n The payout schedule from Waste Pro was $21 million in the next 30 days, $1.5 million on Jan. 31, 2027, and a $1.5 million installment on Jan. 31, 2028. <\/p>\n Both sides agreed to release each other from all outstanding claims and formally dismiss the case. <\/p>\n Port St. Lucie switched to a new waste provider, FCC Environmental Services, in 2022. The seven-year contract, approved on May 18, 2022<\/a>, serves around 82,000 households and 1,300 commercial customers. <\/p>\n The new company operates in seven states, serving 14 million people, including recycling more than 500,000 in 2024, the company said on its website<\/a>. Florida alone represents 550,000 households. <\/p>\n That includes Service Area 4 of the Solid Waste Authority of Palm Beach County, including portions of Boynton Beach and Wellington.
