The state of Florida is suing TikTok over claims<\/a> the company isn\u2019t complying with the state\u2019s child safety law, which bans kids under 14 from creating social media accounts, as reported earlier by Reuters<\/a>. The lawsuit, filed on Monday<\/a>, alleges that TikTok still allows 13-year-olds in Florida to use the platform and is \u201cactively deceiving\u201d parents about its risks.<\/p>\n

When reached for comment, TikTok US spokesperson Jamie Favazza says the company has been engaging constructively and in good faith with Florida\u2019s attorney general, adding that the platform \u201cnotified users under 14 in Florida that their accounts will be suspended.\u201d<\/p>\n

In addition to violating the social media law, Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier claims TikTok doesn\u2019t comply with consumer protection laws by \u201clying\u201d to parents about the content inside its app. \u201cEven though videos with alcohol, tobacco, and drug content are readily available on TikTok, Defendants tell consumers in the App Store that \u2018alcohol, tobacco, and drug . . . references\u2019 are \u2018infrequent\/mild\u2019 on the platform,\u201d the lawsuit claims. It also alleges TikTok designs its app to be \u201caddictive\u201d to children and teens.
