WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (CBS12) \u2014 South Florida continued to receive frequent rainfall this week, with coastal communities along the Atlantic side of the state and much of the southern peninsula remaining in an active wet-weather pattern.<\/p>\n

The Treasure Coast saw the most improvement this week with drought conditions now limited to the communities closest to Lake Okeechobee, as the areas along the coast have seen the most rainfall over the last week. <\/p>\n

While recent rains have helped improve several drought indicators, a long-term hydrologic drought \u2014 a prolonged shortage of water in lakes, rivers, groundwater, and wetlands \u2014 continues to affect the region. The latest assessment found enough improvement to support small reductions in drought conditions across parts of South Florida. <\/p>\n

Despite the recent progress, significant challenges remain. Lake Okeechobee is still more than two feet below its normal level and continues to lose more water through releases and natural outflows than it gains from incoming water. Portions of the Everglades also remain dry, with some areas lacking standing water.<\/p>\n

Burn bans remain in effect in several South Florida counties, highlighting the ongoing risk of wildfire despite recent rainfall.
