TAMPA, Fla. \u2014 As Brazil faced Haiti on Friday night in a FIFA World Cup matchup falling on Juneteenth, fans in Tampa say the moment goes far beyond soccer.<\/p>\n
Across watch parties, dance studios, and small businesses, the match was embraced as a powerful intersection of sport, history and shared identity.<\/p>\n
Brazil, a five-time World Cup champion known for legends like Pel\u00e9, who once visited Haiti, entered the matchup with global recognition. But for many, the significance lies in who they were playing.<\/p>\n
For the first time in 52 years, Haiti shared the World Cup stage with Brazil, a milestone that resonates deeply with the Haitian community.<\/p>\n
\u201cHaiti is such a big fan of Brazil,\u201d said Kenny Juste, operations manager at Sabine\u2019s Gout Creole.<\/p>\n
Juste helped organize a watch party to celebrate Haiti\u2019s national team, which reached the World Cup despite being unable to consistently train or play on home soil due to ongoing gang violence and civil unrest.<\/p>\n
\u201cWell, especially right now, it\u2019s just, you know, it\u2019s a big, like, motivation… even though there\u2019s so much going on, especially in our country,\u201d Juste said.<\/p>\n
For many, the match represented more than competition. It reflected a deeper historical connection between the two nations.<\/p>\n
\u201cBrazil offered us a visa,\u201d Juste said, recalling Brazil\u2019s support for Haitians following the 2010 earthquake.<\/p>\n
That sense of connection is also expressed through culture.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe have a Samba show with Samba and funk. It\u2019s a lot of Brazilian Black history,\u201d said Juliana Paiva of the Brazilian Soul Dance Company.<\/p>\n
Paiva says the alignment of the match with Juneteenth, the day in 1865 when Union soldiers arrived in Galveston, Texas, to announce that the last enslaved people in the state were free, over two years after the Emancipation Proclamation, added another layer of meaning.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt works really well because it\u2019s Juneteenth and Brazil has the biggest Black population outside of Africa,\u201d she said. \u201cSo it works out perfectly.\u201d<\/p>\n
The match was also part of a larger global moment, as the United States hosts the FIFA World Cup for the first time in more than 30 years.<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019m seeing people getting more interested this time around,\u201d Paiva added. \u201cSo it\u2019s really nice to see the community in the U.S. being part of the soccer fever.\u201d<\/p>\n
And for many watching, the result of the game wasn\u2019t the focus.<\/p>\n
\u201cYes, whether Brazil wins, whether Haiti wins (this) is bigger than soccer,\u201d Juste said. \u201cBecause it\u2019s about two nations coming together\u2026 just sharing a big stage, really.\u201d<\/p>\n
