What\u2019s new at Jacksonville Public Library:<\/p>\n
\u201cDead Weight\u201d by\u00a0Hildur Knutsdottir: Unnur was living a normal, if lonely, life until a black cat showed up at her door. When she tracks down the cat’s wayward owner, she finds a young woman just as lost and in need of help. Like a gust of cold air in a Reykjav\u00edk night, \u00c1sta and her pet slip into Unnur’s life. It’s unexpected, but welcome. Unnur likes the company, and she begins to rely on \u00c1sta in turn. But like a black cat, trouble has been tailing her new friend, and Unnur is the only one there for \u00c1sta when things take a violent turn. The two women quickly learn: Nothing tests a friendship like blood on your hands.<\/p>\n
\u201cHow I Make Comics\u201d by Kim\u00a0Deitch: This book pinwheels between autobiography and imagined comics history, but it begins in 1952 with a true story of 8-year-old Kim Deitch appearing in the audience of \u201cThe Howdy Doody Show\u201d with 8-year-old Donnie Trump. Following Donnie’s attempt to rig an election among the audience, Deitch relates a famous newspaper account of a diminutive wife who valiantly defends her equally diminutive husband in court, who just happens to be the inspiration of Harold Gray’s \u201cLittle Orphan Annie.\u201d Periodically, Kim asks his own wife for her critique and advice of the stories he’s told so far, which he takes into account for future tales that include revenge-driven circus performers, fairytale mural painters, sordid comic book lore, comics readers creating real-life superheroes, impossibly old cats issuing supernatural judgments and inhabiting the bodies of humans, and culminating in the real-life story of Kim’s mother hitchhiking across country and being picked up by none other than Forrest J. Ackerman, the sci-fi, fantasy and monster aficionado, who takes her to a convention where she meets a teenage Ray Bradbury. \u201cHow I Make Comics\u201d is a creatively kaleidoscopic, non-stop exploration of how Deitch’s imagination turns ideas, influences and irritations into comics in his inimitable style. Snippets of behind-the-scenes explanations of his notes and sketches expand into cascading short stories.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe Great Divide\u201d by Noah\u00a0Kahan: Riding the momentum from his big commercial breakthrough, 2022’s \u201cStick Season,\u201d singer\/songwriter Noah Kahan released his fourth full-length album, \u201cThe Great Divide.\u201d Like many other solid follow-up sets, it simply takes what made the predecessor so engaging and boosts it with more expensive production, tighter songwriting, and a larger scope. Effortlessly relatable \u2014 which translated to chart-topping success across the globe \u2014 he still has quite the knack for making the mundane seem so poignant.<\/p>\n
\u201cForest\u201d by Derek Harvey: Set out on an expedition through incredible forests of the world, from icy taigas and blooming woodlands to flooded mangroves and sun-drenched rainforests. The library\u2019s Bookmobile is coming to a location near you. Children ages 2 to 18 may check out books each Friday through Aug. 7 at any of these locations:<\/p>\n

You do not need a library card to participate in the Bookmobile, and registration is not required. Stop by and grab some books and a snack, courtesy of the library.<\/p>\n
Illinois State Treasurer Michael Frerichs\u2019 staff will be at the library from 4 to 7\u00a0p.m. Wednesday to help reunite people with missing money through the state\u2019s I-Cash program.
